How to configure SCSI settings for an Adaptec 2940 SCSI Adapter Card using the SCSI Configuration Utility

Solution

When troubleshooting various hardware related errors, the need to use the SCSI Configuration Utility to change the settings on the tape drive SCSI target IDs may arise. The following list of steps is a walk-through guide through the SCSI Configuration Utility for an Adaptec 2940 SCSI Adapter Card (possibly other Adaptec models as well).

1. Reboot the server, and then press the appropriate keys to enter the SCSI Configuration Utility for the adapter card where the device is attached (for Adaptec 2940, press <CTRL+A>) (Figure 1).

2. Move the cursor down and select Configure/View Host Adapter Settings (Figure 2)

3. Move the cursor down to the Additional Options section, select SCSI Device Configuration (Figure 3), and then press <Enter>

4. Select whether the device is Internal or External on this adapter card

5. A screen will be displayed representing each SCSI target ID in columns across the screen, with configurable options going down the screen

6. Find the SCSI Target ID for the tape device that needs to be configured and alter the value next to the corresponding option (Figure 4)

7. After changing the SCSI adapter settings for the appropriate target ID, press the <Esc> key to exit and save the settings. After pressing the <Esc> key, a window asking for confirmation to exit the utility will appear. Click Yes, and then press any key to restart.
