Issue

Auto-Protect does not load when OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is booted into 64-bit kernel mode.

Error

"Symantec AntiVirus could not load the scan engine. Please run LiveUpdate to get the latest version (Code 6)"  (or Code 10)

Cause

Symantec Antivirus for Mac 10.2.3 does not support 64-bit kernel mode.

Solution

This is expected behavior.

Newer models of Macintosh computers are shipping in 64-bit kernel mode.  To verify into which kernel mode your machine is booted, open System Profiler and click on Software in the left pane. You will then see System Software Overview in the right pane. If the system is running in 64-bit mode, "64-bit Kernel and Extensions" will say "Yes".

Workaround
Boot into 32-bit kernel mode by depressing 3 and 2 during startup; for a permanent configuration change, consult Apple Support.   Alternately, Symantec Endpoint Protection for Macintosh supports 64-bit kernel mode.
