How to disable or change the interval for the out-of-date virus definitions message

Environment

Issue



You are using Norton or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. You need to know how to 1) disable the out-of-date virus definitions message so that it does not appear on the workstations, or 2) change the amount of time between messages.


Solution



The steps to change these settings depend on whether the clients are managed or unmanaged.

Managed clients

To disable the warning message
  1. Start the Symantec System Center.
  2. Right-click the parent server, and then click All Tasks > Symantec AntiVirus > Client Administrator Only Options.
  3. Click Actions.
  4. Uncheck Display message when definitions are outdated.
  5. Click OK.

To change the warning interval
  1. Start the Symantec System Center.
  2. Right-click the parent server, and then click All Tasks > Symantec AntiVirus > Client Administrator Only Options.
  3. Click Actions.
  4. Select Display message when definitions are outdated.
  5. Type the number of days before a warning notification will be displayed.
  6. Click OK.

Unmanaged clients

To disable the warning message
  1. Start the Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\AdministratorOnly\General
  3. Right-click DisplayOutdatedMessage, and then click Modify > Decimal.
  4. Change the value from 1 to 0.
  5. Exit the Registry Editor.
  6. Do one of the following, depending on the version of Windows.
    • On Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 clients, restart the client service.
    • On Windows 9x/Me clients, restart the computer.

To change the warning interval
  1. Start the Registry Editor.
  2. Go to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\AdministratorOnly\General
  3. Right-click WarnAfterDays, and then click Modify > Decimal.
  4. Type the number of days before a warning notification will be displayed.
  5. Exit the Registry Editor.
  6. Do one of the following, depending on the version of Windows.
    • On Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 clients, restart the client service.
    • On Windows 9x/Me clients, restart the computer.
