Manually uninstalling Symantec System Center 4.x

This document discusses how to uninstall Symantec System Center manually.
The recommended method for removing Symantec System Center is to use Add/Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel. However, due to an error or some other reason, you may need to uninstall Symantec System Center manually.
Note: This document covers manually removing the Symantec System Center only. Please make sure that the snap-ins have been removed before manually removing Symantec System Center.
WARNING: It is important to make sure you are logged in as Administrator to the computer where you are uninstalling Symantec System Center. Administrator equivalent accounts may not contain sufficient NT rights to do all of the steps outlined in this document.
This document describes how to manually remove Symantec System Center from the following three places:
- The Start menu
- The registry
- The hard drive
Stop the following services before removing items from the registry, Start menu, or the hard drive:
- Intel Alert Handler
- Intel Alert Originator
- Intel File Transfer
- Intel PDS
- Norton AntiVirus Server or Norton AntiVirus Client
- Symantec System Center
To remove Symantec System Center from the Start menu
- Right-click the Start button, and then click Open All Users.
- Double-click Programs.
- Right-click the Symantec System Center folder, and then click Delete.
WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry may result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Be sure to modify the specified keys only. See the document How to back up the Windows 95/98/NT registry before proceeding.
To backup the registry:
- Log on as Administrator.
- Click Start, and then click Run. The Run window appears.
- Type regedit and then press Enter. The Registry Editor opens.
- Click the Registry menu, and then click Export Registry File.
- Type a file name for the backup copy of the registry. By default, this backup copy will be saved to the root of the C drive with a .reg extension.
- Click Save.
You now have a backup of your registry. To restore a registry backup with the default .reg extension, double-click the file. Although this is a handy way to restore files, do not double-click the file unless you are absolutely sure that you want to restore the registry backup.
With the registry backed up, to remove the registry keys created during the installation of Symantec System Center, download and execute the Remove_SSC_Keys.reg file.
Note: This registry file is an unsupported tool.
Remove the following Registry entries/values: (These are not removed with the registry import file.)
Navigate to the following key in the left pane: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL
Right-click the "CurrentLanguage" entry, and then click Delete.
Navigate to the following key in the left pane: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\DLLUsage\VP6
Right-click the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SSC\Transman.dll" entry, and then click Delete.
Navigate to the following key in the left pane: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\AMS 2 SNMP Generator\CurrentVersion
Right-click the "Pathname" that has the value of "C:\WINNT\system32\ams_ii\snmphndl.dll" entry, and then click Delete.
Navigate to the following key in the left pane: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\AMS2\MsgSysCfg
Right-click the "RetryMult" entry, and then click Delete.
Navigate to the following key in the left pane: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI\ODBC Data Sources\
Right-click the "AMSDB" entry, and then click Delete.
Navigate to the following key in the left pane: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\InstalledApps
Right-click the "SSCADMIN" entry, and then click Delete.
Right-click the "VP6UsageCount" entry, and then click Delete.
Close the Registry Editor
Delete the SSC folder
Navigate to the location
If you are reinstalling Symantec System Center and you encounter problems, call Symantec Technical Support.
Note: Manually uninstalling the Symantec System Center may require a reinstall of the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition server or client.
