Problem
You are attempting to install the Symantec AntiVirus or Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition client. The installation fails when the status bar displays the message "Preparing Virus Definitions"; the installation then rolls back.
Cause
Unknown; possibly environmental
Solution
Restricted permissions have been set for Administrators, Creator Owner, or System to the registry keys needed to install Symantec AntiVirus or Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition. To check and correct (if necessary) the permissions, start with the first section, "To verify permissions on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel registry keys," and follow the instructions from there.
Note: If any of these keys does not exist, it is possible that the permissions on the parent key (for example, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software) are incorrect and are preventing the installation from creating the keys. In that case, follow the instructions on the parent key rather than the specified key.
To verify permissions on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel registry keys
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type the following:
regedt32.exe
- Click OK.
- In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel
- Click the Intel key to select it.
- Do one of the following:
- In Windows XP, on the Edit menu, click Permissions.
- In Windows 2000 or NT, on the Security menu, click Permissions.
- Confirm that Administrators, SYSTEM, and CREATOR OWNER are set to Full Control, and change as needed.
- Do one of the following:
- In Windows XP, click Advanced, and then check Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects.
- In Windows 2000, click Advanced, and then check Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions.
- In Windows NT, check Replace permissions on Existing Subkeys.
- Click OK.
- Repeat steps 4 through 9 for the following two registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
- Exit the Registry Editor.
- Install Symantec AntiVirus or Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition.
