Issue



You have Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.5 or 7.6 or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0x installed on your network, and you need to know how to upgrade to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0x or 8.1.


Solution



Upgrading to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x is a three phase process. The phases are:
  • Uninstall certain components from the existing antivirus server, and uninstall the Symantec System Center.
  • Install Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition and components to the server, and install the Symantec System Center.
  • Deploy Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition to clients.

Uninstalling components
The components to uninstall depend on the version of the software currently installed, and on the operating system.

Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.5 or 7.6 on Windows NT/2000/XP
  1. Remove the following components through Add/Remove Programs from the computer that has the Symantec System Center:

    Symantec System Center
    Norton AntiVirus Snap-in
    Norton AntiVirus Add-On for Symantec System Center console
    Symantec Quarantine Console Snap-in
  2. Delete the contents of the Temp folder and the Recycle Bin.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Log on as the local Administrator.
  5. Remove the AMS server through Add/Remove Programs from the computer that has the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition server.
  6. Remove the following folders:
    C:\Program Files\AMS Server
    C:\WINNT\System32\AMS_II


Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x on Windows NT/2000/XP
  1. Remove the following components through Add/Remove Programs from the computer that has the Symantec System Center:

    Symantec System Center
    Symantec Quarantine Console Snap-in
  2. Delete the contents of the Temp folder and the Recycle Bin.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Log on as the local Administrator.
  5. Remove the AMS server through Add/Remove Programs from the computer that has the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition server.
  6. Remove the following folders:
    C:\Program Files\SAV\AMS2
    C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec System Center\AMS2
    C:\WINNT\System32\AMS_II


Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.5 or 7.6 on Novell NetWare
Symantec recommends that you uninstall the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition server on NetWare, rather than upgrade.
  1. From the NetWare console, unload the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition server using Alt+F10.
  2. Type the following at the console prompt:

    LOAD SYS:NAV\VPSTART /REMOVE
On the Windows computer that runs the Symantec System Center
  1. Remove the following components through Add/Remove Programs:

    Symantec System Center
    Norton AntiVirus Snap-in
    Norton AntiVirus Add-On for Symantec System Center console
    Symantec Quarantine Console Snap-in
  2. Delete the contents of the Temp folder and the Recycle Bin.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Log on as the local Administrator.


Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x on Novell NetWare


NOTE: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0 can be upgraded to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x without uninstalling any components from the NetWare server.


On the Windows computer that runs the Symantec System Center:
  1. Remove the following components through Add/Remove Programs:

    Symantec System Center
    Symantec Quarantine Console Snap-in
  2. Delete the contents of the Temp folder and the Recycle Bin.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Log on as the local Administrator.
    Installing Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Server and components
    1. Install Symantec System Center and console components:
      1. From CD 1, launch Setup.exe, select "Install Administrator Tools", and then select "Install Symantec System Center."
      2. Click Next at the InstallShield Wizard window.
      3. Accept the license agreement and click Next.
      4. The Select Components window appears. Leave all items selected by default, and click Next.
      5. The Destination Folder window appears. Click Next for the default installation path.
      6. The "Ready to Install the Program" appears. Click Install.
      7. When the installation is complete, click Finish and restart the computer.
    2. Install the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Server:
      1. From CD 1, launch Setup.exe, select "Install Symantec AntiVirus", and then select "Deploy AntiVirus Server."
      2. The Welcome window appears. Select Update, and click Next.
      3. Select the Computer Name, click Add, and enter password for Server Group.
      4. Click Finish to proceed with the update.
      5. When the update process is finished, click Close and restart the computer.


        Notes:
        - Real-time protection will start on the computer as soon as Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is installed, but the Intel Alert Management System (AMS) services will not start until after you restart the computer. If it is necessary to wait for a scheduled restart, the computer will be protected from the time of installation, but AMS alerting will not work.
        - Do not delete the NAV folder located by default at: :\Program Files\NAV, as this folder is updated. A non-upgraded installation of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Server will create a folder called SAV located at \Program Files\SAV.

    3. Install Central Quarantine Server: (OPTIONAL)
      1. From CD 1, launch Setup.exe, select "Install Administrator Tools", and then select "Install Central Quarantine Server."
      2. Click Next at the "Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard" window.
      3. Accept the license agreement, and click Next.
      4. The Destination Folder window appears. Click Next for the default installation path.
      5. Select Internet based (Recommended), and click Next.
      6. Select desired Disk space and click Next.
      7. Fill out Contact Information and click Next. (Account Number = your Contact ID Number)
      8. Do not make any changes to the default Gateway Name. Click Next.
      9. Select Enable Alerts, type the AMS Server Name (generally the primary server), and click Next.
      10. Click Install to install Central Quarantine.
      11. When the installation is complete, click Finish and restart the computer.
    4. Install Quarantine Console: (OPTIONAL)
      1. From CD 1, launch Setup.exe, select "Install Administrator Tools", and then select "Install Quarantine Console."
      2. Click Next at the "Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard" window.
      3. Accept the license agreement and click Next.
      4. The Destination Folder window appears. Click Next for the default installation path.
      5. The "Ready to Install the Program" window appears. Click Install.
      6. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
      Deploy the clients
      The following method is just one way of installing the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x client to Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. Uninstalling previously existing clients is generally not required prior to the installation of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x client, provided that the client is not damaged.
      1. From CD 1, launch Setup.exe, select "Install Symantec AntiVirus", and then select "Install AntiVirus Client."
      2. Proceed with upgrade process.
      3. Restart the computer.
