Problem

You used Symantec Packager to create a passive mode install of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (AV) 8.0 server. At the end of the installation, it displays an "Old Virus Definition File" dialog box, which requires user interaction to close.

Solution

To suppress the "Old Virus Definition File" message at the end of the installation:
  1. Navigate to the following folder (for the server):
    :\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Symantec\Packager\Products\{7D2B86CA-2D5D-469E-92ED-E56B62BD1D3C}.8.0.0.374\Files\BinaryTable\CD_Install_Files\Data\Registry

    or for the client:

    :\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Symantec\Packager\Products\{0EFC6259-3AD8-4CD2-D4937AF5CC0E}.8.0.0.374\Files\BinaryTable\CD_Install_Files\Data\Registry
  2. Use a text editor such as Notepad.exe to edit the CmnLM.Reg file.
  3. Search the CmnLM.Reg file for the following string:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\AdministratorOnly\General
  4. Under this string you should see the following line:
    "ShowVPIcon"=dword:00000001
    Place the cursor at the end of this line and press Enter to add a new blank line underneath.
  5. Paste the following text into the new blank line:
    "DisplayOutdatedMessage"=dword:00000000

    The section should now read as follows:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\AdministratorOnly\General
    "ShowVPIcon"=dword:00000001
    "DisplayOutdatedMessage"=dword:00000000
  6. Save your changes to CmnLM.Reg and close the text editor.
  7. Use Symantec Packager to recreate the Symantec AV server installation.
When you install Symantec AV server using this new package, the installer will add the registry key "DisplayOutdatedMessage"=dword:00000000, and will suppress the "Old Virus Definition File" dialogue.
