Arming Your Helpdesk to Manage SVS Packages, Part 3 of 3: Managing SVS Layers with USB stick

The final thing we needed to provide our Helpdesk team was a way to go to the end user's machine and manage SVS layers locally via USB. As stated before, no end user in our environment has the SVS Admin console installed.

This document has been created to help an IT technician manage SVS layers via a U3 USB thumb drive on a local machine that does not have SVS Admin installed. This article is basically the one posted here on Juice by erikw but I wanted to post all 3 processes our Helpdesk uses to manage layers into a book. Hoping this will help others interested in moving to SVS find the information they need easily. Thanks erikw for this tool!!

Please view the Arming Your Helpdesk to Manage SVS Layers, Part 1 of 3: Managing Layers with SVS Admin Console for in depth detail on how to manage the SVS Admin tool including layers, activate, deactivate, reset and other options.

HARDWARE NEEDED: USB device with U3 software: This device can be purchased at any retail store.

Getting Started:

  1. Plug in the U3 USB thumb drive (See IT Manager for details on a U3 USB Thumb Drive)
  2. Download the SVSAdmin.zip file from http://www.symantec.com/community/download/1496/sv...
  3. Figure 1 - Left click the icon in the taskbar.
  4. Select Add program > My Computer
  5. From the extracted SVSAdmin.zip - select SVSAdmin.u3p. This will install the SVS Admin tool on your U3 USB drive.
  6. Physically go to the client or users computer and log in as an administrator.
  7. Software Virtualization Agent must be installed on the client machine.
    1. If the agent has not been installed then click the software delivery tab in Altiris Agent and run the Software Virtualization Agent Package. After verifying the SVS agent has been installed proceed to step 7.
  8. Plug in the U3 USB device.
  9. Figure 1 - Left click the icon in the taskbar.
