Now that we have reviewed using the SVS admin console, let's take a look at managing the layers using cmd line. We felt our helpdesk needed a way to assist users that may have been unreachable via our Task server. Some of this information is already posted but hopefully putting this all together in one place with help others.

This document has been created to help an IT technician open the Altiris SVS Admin tool via Command-line on a local machine that does not have SVS Admin.

SVS Admin via Command-Line does the same task as Altiris Task Server & USB.

Log into the clients computer and open a command prompt. At this point there are several commands you can run.

The main commands you will need to know are listed below.

Note: Screenshots below are examples of each command.

For further explanation or other commands you can visit http://www.symantec.com/connect

SVSCMD.EXE ENUM List all existing layers on the local machine
SVSCMD.EXE SEND Send inventory information to Notification Server
SVSCMD.EXE VER Display the current version of the Software Virtualization Agent files
SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" P Displays properties for the layer, such as its name, state, type, priority, version, guid, last activated time, create time, and last reset time.
SVSCMD.EXE I -P [PATH] Import layer
SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" A Activate the layer
SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" Auto Start Layer Automatically
SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" D Deactivate the layer
SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" R Reset the layer
SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" DEL Delete the layer

SVSCMD.EXE ENUM

SVSCMD.EXE SEND

SVSCMD.EXE VER

SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" P

SVSCMD.EXE I -P [PATH]

SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" A

SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" Auto

SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" D

SVSCMD.EXE "Layer Name" R

The information in this document is only to be used by IT Technicians. No other user should use this tool to manage any SVS virtual software.

Up next… Manage SVS layers using USB stick.
