Customizing the Test Expert Tool in Wise Package Studio

WiseUser's picture

As we know Test Expert provides a structured, intelligent approach to testing Windows Installer packages and it eliminates the random approach often used in an ad hoc testing environment. Test Expert generates test cases based on the .MSI contents and lets you add test cases that fit your organization's needs. Testers are guided step-by-step through test plans and can view the test status at any stage of the testing.

We can add our own test cases that are needed for the organization's needs. We can then create a template out of it and make it a default template to load with Test Expert along with predefined test cases that it automatically generates.

We can save the template as a .wte file. We can make this wte file a default template to load with test expert by means of the project template which is available in Wise Package Studio.

Snapshots that demonstrate how to create a base template for the test cases:

To add a New Test Case in the Template:

Add a new Test case:

New test case in the installation tests tab:

We can add the custom test case in either of the test cases like application execution tests, standard tests, uninstall tests, or installation tests, depending on the category which it belongs to.

Kindly note that Test Expert will auto load the test cases depending on the MSI you select.

For Example: If the MSI has the shortcut then Test Expert will generate a test case for the shortcuts. The test case has an option to execute the shortcut in order to validate the execution of the shortcuts.

Saving the template:

Loading the Template:

Now We can use the custom template again for all the packages.
