Deleting a Driver from WinPE
Most of us who use WinPE in Ghost Solution Suite would have thought we could delete a driver from WinPE. We may have added the wrong driver which did not work and this would remain there in the Ghost boot wizard forever. If there are a lots of unwanted drivers which need to be removed please go through the following steps to delete them completely from your WinPE.
First open the Ghost Boot Wizard -> select a WinPE template and click the edit button
(In my case, I have 3 WinPE templates and 'Copy_WinPE512' is a copy of 'winpe-512' which I created)
Now note the name of the driver which needs to be deleted from the list of Network or Storage drivers
(in my case i am removing the "Linksys.G.Wireless" from the Network drivers list)
Now open 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost\Template\common'
Inside this folder find the folder by the name 'windrivers' and find the driver folder which needs to be deleted(in my case the "Linksys.G.Wireless"). Delete the driver folder or cut and paste it in a different location if you want to test this first.
Now get back to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost\Template\common' and open a WinPE template
(I am opening the 'Copy_WinPE512' first since I have a copy)
Next open the 'drivers.manifest.txt' file in this folder (If you want to test this first please save a copy of the .txt file in a different location)
Use 'ctrl+f' to open the find window. Type the name of the driver as in the Ghost Boot Wizard and click find next. This will automatically find the driver entry in the text document.
After deleting please click on 'file' in the notepad and save it in the same name.
Please note that you will have to follow the same steps for the winpe and winpe-512 folders. These folders can be found in 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost\Template\common'. Else the driver would not be deleted from the WinPE list.
Now open the Ghost boot wizard and check if the drivers you removed are still listed.
NOTE: Make sure that you remove the correct driver and at your own risk.
