Deployment Solution 7.x: DS Site Server Configuration, Part 2

Dec 05, 2011 03:56 PM

This article is next part of Deployment Solution 7.x: DS Site Server Configuration, Part 1

In this part we will see following:

1.      Deployment Site Server on NS which has Package Server installed – Important Note @ Part 1:8

2.      Deployment Site Server on Site Server other than NS

Following steps are required on NS [should not take more than 30 min] to configure Deployment Site Server:

1.      Under SMConsole > Settings > Notification Server > Site Server Settings > Site Management > Site Servers have only NS visible [With Monitor and Task Service already enabled ] and if there is another Site Server visible remove the enabled services from that; this will make it disappear from the Site Servers list [Don’t worry we will come back to this once your NS is configured as PS :)]

2.      For NS select Package Service from Install/remove Services

3.      If you leave the NS as is now; it will take default 1 hour configuration policy update time which can be seen on Symantec Management Agent  > Right Click > SMAgent Settings

4.      To install PS immediately; click on “Update” of NS SMAgent Settings when the “Requested and Changed” time changes to the present system time means some policy has got updated

5.      Check the SMAgent > Software Delivery tab [this should have all the options except Block network activity enabled] this should show the Package Server package download and installation process

6.      Once this is done than you should see “Disabled” for package server plug-in. At this time SMagent will get disappear for a sec or so and come back

7.      Now SMagent should have addition of a tab as “Package Server” after Software Delivery and Task Status with the blank package list

8.      Wait for “5-10” min and click on Refresh Packages [package transfer activity can be seen in Altiris Log Viewer]

9.      Click on “Update” [as mentioned at #4]

10.  Close the SMAgent and Reopen it back which should display all packages downloading and coming in “Package is ready” state [Note: All Deployment Solution specific packages (default count 8) would be in “Invalid” state at this point of time ]

11.  Than remaining part is Deployment Site Server Component plug-in installation; here the policy page filter will display all the Site Servers which have both TS and PS installed; successful installation of the same must make all “Invalid” packages to “Ready” state.

12.  Enable the SBS services immediately after DS Site Server installation and then start working on DS

Following steps are required on NS [should not take more than 30 min] to configure Deployment Site Server on Non NS managed computer:

1.      Under SMConsole > Settings > Notification Server > Site Server Settings > Site Management > Click on Site Servers > New and select the computer from the list which has all Site Server prerequisites to install first Task Service and than Package Service from Install/remove Services.

2.      If you leave the NS as is now; it will take default 1 hour configuration policy update time which can be seen on Symantec Management Agent  > Right Click > SMAgent Settings

3.      To install PS immediately; click on “Update” of Site Server SMAgent Settings when the “Requested and Changed” time changes to the present system time means some policy has got updated

4.      Check the SMAgent > Software Delivery tab [this should have all the options except Block network activity enabled] this should show the Task Server and Package Server package download and installation process

5.      Once this is done than you should see “Disabled” for package server plug-in. At this time SMagent will get disappear for a sec or so and come back

6.      Now SMagent should have addition of a tab as “Package Server” after Software Delivery and Task Status with the blank package list

7.      Wait for “5-10” min and click on Refresh Packages [package transfer activity can be seen in Altiris Log Viewer]

8.      Click on “Update” [as mentioned at #4]

9.      Close the SMAgent and Reopen it back which should display all packages downloading and coming in “Package is ready” state [Note: All Deployment Solution specific packages (default count 8) would be in “Invalid” state at this point of time ]

10.  Than remaining part is Deployment Site Server Component plug-in installation; here the policy page filter will display all the Site Servers which have both TS and PS installed; successful installation of the same must make all “Invalid” packages to “Ready” state.

11.  Enable the SBS services immediately after DS Site Server installation and then start working on DS

Hope this would be helpful.

Thanks,

Vaibhav

To be frank this is bit bulky and took time to go through this completely but with good information inside. I found it perfectly suitable for me and was able to configure my DS specific Site Server using it.
