Ghost Disk Reading Sata HDD

Jan 22, 2009 05:28 PM

This is a fix for all Ghost disks, Windows XP install disks, some certain situations of WinPE and BartPE. This is very simple fix that many people seem to forget.

I apologize all, this is not a finished article. Sections for BartPE and WinPE will be added at a later date. This Article only contains Legacy DOS Ghost startup disks

To fix it so that these programs can read SATA disks changes slightly in each setup. What is required is when you boot up your computer enter into your BIOS.

Rather this be by F12, ESC, Del, F2, or many other options that are specific only to your computer. When you boot into the BIOS locate the SATA Controller options.

It may follow under a number of names:

  • Sata Controller
  • IDE Controller
  • Drive Controller
  • ++ Many more depending on the manufacturer

You want to change this option normally from SATA or ACHI to normally one of these three.

  • IDE
  • Compatibility
  • Legacy.

Notice it would only be one of these choices and it may be named differently.

Again this option is for people who cannot find the SATA Drivers or do not want to go through the extra work. From my experience this works in a good 95% of all scenarios.

Pikoshi,

Running Ghost32.exe in a Windows PE environment fully supports SATA drives in their native/AHCI/SATA mode. With Ghost.exe in a DOS environment, it is not always possible to image SATA drives. Sometimes adding the following command line switches will allow imaging:

-FNI -FFX -NOIDE -NOUSB

Though often, as RanGhostBoot indicated, setting the mode to Legacy/IDE/etc is necessary in PC-DOS.

I apologize, i am new to this system and this wasn't a finished article. I did not realize they would publish it right away.
Thats a simple fix for DOS SATA Ghost, another way is to use winPE or BartPE in a Win32 environment with SATA controllers.
I am a student that works for the college computer center and use Norton Ghost. In doing so i've had to develop a few workarounds for all our systems (Due to the new SATA drives)
Once my workload slows down i will finish the article.

What about the new machines that have no option but to be run in SATA mode? A lot of the new desktops and laptops from both HP and IBM have no option for IDE, Compatibility, or Legacy or anything else. These machines are becoming more and more previlent in the marketplace and more and more companies are receiving these when they go to purchase new equipment. Seems this solution may be a bit outdated.
Also, this isn't that great a solution as it does not allow one to achieve the maxium potential of the machine. Yes sometimes it can be difficult to get and add the drivers to the preboot, but in all cases it is possible.
