GIN License and its procedure to update over SSIM 4.7.3

Jan 31, 2012 07:28 AM

What is GIN?

The Symantec Global Intelligence Network (GIN) is comprehensive collection of vendor-neutral security data sources. This service is an authoritative source of Information about known and emerging vulnerabilities, threats, risks, and global attack activity. The GIN provides information about the current ThreatCon level and provides advice and instructions on how to guard against and respond to the current threats.

How GIN works?

The Symantec Global Intelligence Network uses automated systems to map the IP addresses of the attacking systems to identify the country in which they are located. However, because attackers frequently use compromised systems situated around the world to launch attacks remotely, the location of the attacking systems may differ from the location of the attacker.

How to configure & Verify GIN status @ SSIM?

Information Manager lets you configure your Information Manager Server to update the Global Intelligence Network (GIN) content from the GIN website using the Internet or a proxy server. The ability to update GIN content or to get updates from a proxy server allows the Information Manager Server to maintain current security content without being connected to the Internet.

To view Global Intelligence Network content status

  1. On the Web configuration interface of the Information Manager, go to Monitor > SSIM.
  2. Click GIN Status.

The Status view displays information about the security content server, the content license, and the server database. It also displays timestamps for the latest content updates.

In the Content License Status area, you can see the number of days before the license expires, along with the expiration date. If you have multiple licenses, the latest expiration date appears.

Procedure to update GIN license over SSIM.

GIN license comes with a .slf file extension and the same file needs to be imported on all the boxes of the SSIM server as per your SSIM Infrastructure (Service Provider, Collectors, Correlaters, Archeivers…)

Before we start updating the GIN license, we must first make sure the provided .slf file is a valid 90 days evaluation license.

To verify it – Open it with notepad and check the start data and end date parameters in HTML tags.

Steps for updating GIN License.

Login to Web console of any SSIM box -> Navigate to -> Settings Tab -> Move to Licensing Option.

On the left pane you will see two links named as “SSIM” & “GIN

 Click on GIN

In the current License window pane you will able to see old GIN license info which is about to expire.

Below the Current License window you will find a Supply a license file.

Browse the new .slf license and open to update the same and you will find the changes occurred over the Current License windows with new GIN License dates.

When you are finished with the license updation, you can verify the days of GIN status by navigating to Monitor Tab -> SSIM -> GIN Status.

Repeat the same procedure on all the SSIM Servers in your SSIM Infrastructure through Web Console only.

IF you are talking about GIN LIcense expired:

Yes. SSIM will work but the the live update component and GIN component of SSIM won't be working. Your SSIM will be functional but will be less lucarative. You just can't get any content updated.
