Graphical Configuration of Patch Management 7.5 for Red Hat Linux

On the previous article:

we had configured the patch management for Windows. Now, we will show you how to configure patch management for Red Hat Linux.

The general steps are just the same to the Windows:

Install software update plugin --> Configure software update plugin --> Windows Patch remediation settings --> Import channels --> Select vendors and software --> Import patch data --> Run system assessment scan --> Download patch package --> Distribute patch package --> Check delivery report

But, you will need a RHN account to download the Red Hat Linux patch from Internet. That's the biggest different to Windows.

Here are the graphical steps:

1. Log into SMP, select 'Settings' --> 'Agents/Plug-ins' --> 'Software' --> 'Patch Management' --> 'Linux', select 'Default Software Update Plug-in Settings', you can change the software update plug-in policy, but, generally, it's OK to keep them just the default ones:

2. Select 'Software Update Plug-in Install', enable this setting, and select the 'Run' as 'Once ASAP', then click 'Save changes'. This will trigger a installation of the software update plug-in for all the agents:

3. Expand 'Software' --> 'Patch Management' --> 'Red Hat Settings', click 'Red Hat Patch Remediation Settings', then select 'Red Hat Network' tab, input the RHN account for the downloading of Red Hat patch:

4. Select 'Task' --> 'Jobs and Tasks' --> 'System Jobs and Tasks' --> 'Software' --> 'Patch Management', select 'Import Patch Data for Red Hat', then click 'Import channels':

5.  The system will download the channel list from Red Hat and import the Patch Management:

6. After the channels imported, select the proper version from the Red Hat linux list, then click 'New Schedule':

7. Select the 'Schedule' as 'Now', and click 'Schedule':

8. The system will download the patch list of the version you selected from Red Hat:

9. Double-click the task, and will open the detailed status:

10. After the system download all the patch list from Red Hat, then you can run a assessment scan for your Red Hat Linux . Click 'Home', and select 'Patch Management', this will open the central portal of patch management:

11. Select 'Run System Assessment Scan' from the left panel, enable and start the scan. The system will run a scan on the Red Hat Linux computers, and collect the information about the patch installation on these computers:

12. Click 'Compliance by Computer' from the left panel to check the scan result. You will find out the compliance status about the computer:

13. Then you can download and distribute patches for these computers. Select 'Errata' from the left panel, then right click a patch from the right panel, select 'Download Packages':

14. The system will download the patch package from Red Hat:

15. After the package has been downloaded, right click the patch again, then select 'Distribute Packages':

16. Select the computers that the package will be distributed and installed, then click 'Next':

17. On this step, you can modify the installation command line parameters, click to enable the policy, then click 'Distribute software updates':

18. The patch package will be distribute the computers:

19. Finally, you can select the 'Delivery Summary' from the left panel to check the status of the patch package distribution:
