How to Create and Deploy Images via Console Without Installing the Remote Client

Jul 02, 2010 05:33 PM

There would be a need for some of us at least to use Console task to create/restore images without installing the Remote Client. This could be achieved very easily and I am sorry if somebody has already published an article for the same.

In this scenario we will have to create a boot disk to boot the client machines into the PreOS and then connect to the server to run the tasks. Please find below screenshots of the Ghost boot wizard on how to create a boot disk for this purpose.

Open the Ghost Boot Wizard and proceed by the usual method to create the Boot Disc. In the final review screen please edit the following

Remove the Ghost32.exe after clicking on the "start editing" button as shown below

Now replace the "Ghost32.exe" with "ngctw32.exe -console" as shown below

Click on the next button and proceed to finish.

Now reboot the client machines using the boot disk created and open the Ghost Console. Once rebooted the client machines will start "sending and acknowledging" the Ghost server.

You could see that the client machine would be seen in the default folder under machine groups. This is the same as you see in a PXE boot - the ngctw32.exe just mimics the client machine in the console. Now select the client machine and execute a create or restore task as we do normally.

This would be more helpful when you would be in need to use the Sysprep Minisetup in Ghost console rather than running the utility manually. And lot more reasons to use this method.

Hope this helps people like me who wants images to be created without the remote client in them.
