Ghost Solution Suite 3 requires a preboot operating system to perform imaging tasks. Our default preboot operating system is WinPE 5.1. This tutorial will show you how to import this into Ghost Solution Suite 3. Please note that this is for a console installation. If you chose Ghost Standard Tools, there are separate instructions for that in a document to follow.
1. Go here and download the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) for Windows 8.1 Update. Install as directed. When asked for features to install, these two are the only ones we require:
2. Launch the Ghost Console. In the console, click on Tools > Boot Disk Creator.
3. This window will launch. Select "WinPE 5.X x86".
4. Click the radio button for "Pre-installed ADK", then browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits. Click Next.
5. It will take a couple minutes to completely import this. After it completes, you will see the following screen. Click Finish.
6. The following pop-up will then appear. Click Cancel.
7. Click Tools > Install Pre-Boot Operating Systems.
8. Select "WinPE 5.X x64". Click the radio button for "Pre-installed ADK", then browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits. Click Next.
9. As with the WinPE 5.X x86 import, this too will take a couple minutes. When it completes, click Finish.
Ghost now has the default WinPE 5.x preboot operating systems installed.
WinPE 4.0 is the latest you can install into DS 6.9, and doing that requires the final service pack for that software, SP6. The successor to DS 6.9 is Ghost Solution Suite 3. GSS 3 allows you to use WinPE 5.1, and GSS 3.1 allos you to use WinPE 10. The standalone BDC for that is installed with the Standard Tools installation for Ghost Solution Suite 3 and 3.1. You should contact Customer care at (800) 721-3934 and look into licensing for GSS 3.x and see if your current DS license can be converted. Once you have a valid license, you can download Ghost Standard Tools from https://fileconnect.symantec.com by logging in with your serial number.
Do you know the latest WinPE version we can tie into DS 6.9? Currently trying to image UEFI-based machines such as Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10 and not having much success with WinPE 4.
Also, where might I find the install for the standalone BDC? I may have better luck isolating the OS and ADK running it outside of the server DS resides.
Currently, no. The embedded Boot Disk Creator (the BDC installed with the console) is designed for WinPE 5 (Windows ADK 8.1) only. The Standard Tools Boot Disk Creator allows use of WinPE 2.x through 5.x (but not yet the version of WInPE in Widows 10 ADK). As I understand, the next version of Ghost (GSS 3.1), due this year, allows the use of the Windows ADK 10.
Will the files from the new Windows 10 ADK work for this process as well?
