How to install the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client (bcp.exe)

Jun 09, 2015 10:58 AM

The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) requires the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client (bcp.exe & SQLCMD) to communicate with the SQL database. Thus before installing SEPM, it is required to install the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client.

To do so with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and onwards:

  1. Execute the Microsoft SQL Server iso file to run the Setup wizard,
  2. In Setup Role, keep the default option SQL Server Feature Installation and click Next,
  3. In Feature Selection, select Management Tools - Basic and click Next - see below:01_0.png
  4. Complete the Setup wizard to start the installation,
  5. Once the installation completed, it shows that in addition to Management Tools - Basic, SQL Client Connectivity and SQL Client Connectivity SDK have also been installed - see below:02_0.png

Additional information:

The Microsoft SQL Server Native Client is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn (default location) - see below:03_0.png

While installing SEPM, the Management Server Configuration Wizard requires to browse to the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client folder in order to establish the connection with the database - see below:04_0.png

Prior to install SQL, you might need to install NetFx3

First open the Server Manager tool of Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 and then click on the Manage and go to "Add Roles and Features". (Refer below image)

And it will open a "Add Roles and Features Wizard" window. (Refer following image)

his is the default screen unless if you didn't tick the "Skip this page by default". However just go through this page content or simply click "Next" button.

Now we are in the "Installation Type" Page. (Refer the below image)

We just have to skip this window because we are not going to install a server role and we want to install a server feature. Therefore press "Next" button in the bottom of the wizard and it will navigate the page to "Features" page. (Refer the below image) Finally we are there!!

After the installation is completed following window will appear and if it does not have any error messages then you have completed the installation properly. (Refer the below image)
