How to remove SEP from Add/Remove programs if CleanWipe did not help?

Dec 14, 2011 06:38 AM

1. Open Regedit

2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\

3. Search for symantec

4. If you find any entry related to Symantec Endpoint Protection, make an export of the full hive then delete it:

5. Follow the same search/export/delete process for the following locations :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\

5b. At this stage, there should not be anymore SEP entry into Add/Remove Programs

6. Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec (or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Symantec on 64 bits machine), after exporting it

(ATTENTION : TO DO ONLY IF SEP IS THE ONLY SYMANTEC PRODUCT INSTALLED)

7. Delete C:\Program Files\Symantec (or C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec on 64 bits machine)

(ATTENTION : TO DO ONLY IF SEP IS THE ONLY SYMANTEC PRODUCT INSTALLED)

8. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec (or C:\ProgramData\Symantec on post-Windows 2003/XP machines)

(ATTENTION : TO DO ONLY IF SEP IS THE ONLY SYMANTEC PRODUCT INSTALLED)

9. Use CleanWipe once again

Is deletion of Registry keys is the right way?

Hello John, FRom what I know about msi installer, if you are unable to uninstall from Control Panel, it wouldbe difficult to remove it from msi code.

Also Symantec has a public KB article on this since long time.

The purpose of this article is to allow you to manually remove SEP "Add/Remove Programs" entry throught registry, when SEP uninstall is failing using Add/Remove Programs.

NOTE: CleanWipe would try to uninstall SEP using MSI package if SEP is still available into Add/Remove Programs. However, it may fails if MSI package is not reachable for any reasons (registry key issue, package missing, etc.), then it can run into an install/uninstall loop. Removing "Add/Remove Programs" entry manually allow you to prevent this problem.
