Summary
This document details the Asset Types and Statuses that we have come to track within our Symantec Management Platform for ITAM managed equipment. Feel free to use this as a basic template, take what you want, and adjust, review, and apply to your environment. Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to Asset Management.
The information below is a result of the accumulation of meetings, discussions, trial-and-error, additional revisions to our process as situations arise. We feel that this is a good foundation for over 98% of our Asset Management activities.
Asset Types
The Asset Type in the SMP allows general categories for assets that are grouped together based on the type of asset. This allows easy integration for management of assets and separation from Inventory data.

if i remember right - Software license recovery is done when it is released from a asset. sending it back to the software license pool.
when a computer asset is retired it releases the altiris management license
Joel Smith wrote a paper on it a while back on when software license is released from a managed asset.
How does changing the asset status change the information / data? When does inventory information go away, if at all, unless asset is deleted? I noticed these statements:
Retired assets release an inventory license, but for software delivery and patch management, the asset record must be deleted to release a license.
How does moving an asset to Retired effect the data / info of that asset?
License recovery - License recovery is dependent on deleting the computer record. For Software Management Solution starting from version 7.5, a license is also released after setting the computer status to any value other than Active
Guess I am looking for when a license is released and what happens to the data because of the change in status. Is there a paper on that?
Are asset TYPES editable? We're finding that cellphones connecting to wifi show up as 'network resources' rather than cellphones and need to change that.
Are Asset Statuses editable?
