Migrating Monitor Solution 7 Policies Between Servers

scottwed's picture

For those of you that have been experimenting with the beta versions of Monitor Solution 7, it's not immediately obvious how to get your Monitoring policies out of the old server, and into the new server.

I personally ran into this problem and figured I wouldn't be the last person to do so. For the impatient reader: Exported Monitor Policy Item = Monitor Pack

In the Altiris 6 world, the solution would be to right-click on the existing custom policy and choose Export. This creates a XML file that can be copied to a file system accessible to the new server. This step remains the same for MS7 (Export Monitor Policy Item).

Now, on the new server, things change a bit. Traditionally, you would right-click on the Monitoring Policy folder, choose Import, and select the XML file.

With MS7, there's no option to import. Instead:

  1. Place the XML file on the NS7's local file system
  2. Select Symantec Management Console > Manage > Policies > Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor > Import Monitor Pack
  3. Click the Add button, and use the file browser to import the exported XML policy file
  4. After the table refreshes, pick the new row that corresponds to your custom policy, click the Schedule button, and accept the default Run now option
  5. After the import finishes, click the refresh icon in the Item tree pane
  6. Your new policy will be in the Monitor Policies folder. This process will also import any dependent Metrics, Rules, Detection, and Actions
  7. Finish the activity by updating the Applies To section, Enabling the policy (click the Red button), and click the Save Changes button at the bottom.
