If you are planning to install Notification Server in your environment and looking for some nice information, refer to this article which guides to the installation process of Notification Server 6.0

Before we start with the installation, let's first understand what Notification Server is and what the use in an Altiris environment is.

To be precise Notification Server is the baseline where all your solutions are installed (different CMS level licenses purchased) and accordingly configured. NS plays a very important role as far as managing resources is concerned: where you create tasks, policies, generate reports by using different solutions that are configured on Notification Server.

It' s very critical you first understand the role so that base is clear. It works with client agent and server relationship, you need to install base agent on clients so that they communicate with the NS server that is configured and running in your environment.

Notification Server is a web-based solution, which works on Internet Explorer interface.

So now we have that understood let's begin with the installation process.

Requirements of NS server

Minimum Requirements - Hardware

Processor- Pentium III 800 MHz or higher
RAM-1 GB or higher
File System - NTFS system partition
Disk Space -105 MB for Notification Server and components
- 1 GB for SQL Server database

Software Requirements

Operating System-Windows Server 2003 SP1, or later version.Windows 2000 Server SP4
SQL Database - Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP3 (recommended), or later version.
Microsoft .NET - Notification Server uses Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1.
Microsoft Windows Internet Information Services (IIS) - Microsoft IIS 5.0 or 6.0 (requires the Web server to be hosted on NTFS). This component is not installed by default with Windows 2000. For Windows 2003, enable ASPNET.
Web Browser- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0

Below are the steps for installation of Notification Server version 6

As you see in the above screenshot, it' s stating the requirements of IIS and ASP.net in order to install NS 6.0

As per above screenshot, Please go to Add/ remove programs and install IIS/ASP.

As per above screenshot, click finish in order to complete the installation of IIS/ASP.

After capturing the perquisites NS can be installed as demonstrated below.

To install Notification Server, double click Altiris_NS_6_0.exe file. And it will start the installation of Notification Server.

In Welcome Wizard, press "Next" button to proceed to next step.

Give username and organization name

Select Complete to install NS with default settings or select Custom option to install in other location. And press "Next" button.

Press "Install" button. This will install the Altiris Notification Server.

After installation is completed it will open the below window to finish the installation of NS, then it will configure the components that are required for NS to function.
