Scense develops user based software for dynamic control of Windows sessions.

In cooperation with Altiris, a special Scense interface was created to enable SVS support. This program interface allows virtualized applications to be centrally managed and controlled.

How the application is used and what users have access to is centrally defined. This integration makes it possible to run applications unaltered on multiple operating systems, in a mixed environment using different installation methods.

User Experiences

The University of Maastricht in the Netherlands has recently implemented the Scense+Altiris SVS solution. The result: a dynamic, flexible and stable Windows user environment.

With Scense+Altiris, SVS applications run in parallel, in different virtual layers, so application conflicts are no longer possible. Communication between applications, e.g. linking and embedding, is still possible, which makes it stand out above other virtualization solutions.

Maastricht University chose the Scense+Altiris SVS solution after an extensive research on several possibilities, including SoftGrid.

Scense's Added Value

Scense adds some unique benefits to the Altiris virtualization solution:

Real-time session management and control

With the combination Scense+Altiris SVS not only virtual applications are centrally managed and controlled, also the entire Windows session of the user is controlled, from logon to logoff. For each individual user, Scense checks and controls the user environment, in real-time. The composed environment is based on personal settings and applications, and can be independent of location and PC type. Dynamic scripts, of which the content is assembled in real-time, are used to enable the execution of specific actions during specified session events. These actions can easily be modified by the administrator, in real-time and from a central location.

The dynamic control of user sessions, from logon to logoff, is a unique Scense functionality.

Real-time user guidance

As a part of the dynamic session control, on the front-end Scense takes care of guiding the user. Starting from the idea that the user’s satisfaction and productivity can be significantly increased, when he/she feels more in control an at the same time is shielded from technical issues, Scense developed it’s client software to communicate with the user. With the help of Scense Client users can solve small problems all by themselves, e.g. restoring shortcuts or network connections. Applications can be re-configured with just one click. When the IT department is busy with application maintenance, the user receives a clear messages that the requested application is temporarily unavailable. Scense is the only software company having such a clear user focus, focusing in the first place on the front-end rather than on the back-end.

In practice, we see that users are more confident of and satisfied with their Windows environment when using Scense.

On-demand application availability

With Scense+Altiris SVS, applications are available on-demand, with one click on the program icon. If the user is a member of a user group (registered in the active directory) that has access to that application, the application will be started.
This is more efficient than other solutions currently available. For example, Softricity is offering on-demand availability, where the IT administrator has to determine for each request whether the user is qualified or not to use a certain application.

Roaming user support

SVS stores user settings within the virtual layer system. It does not provide any means to make these settings 'portable'. Scense fills this gap with added roaming user support.

With Scense, virtual layer applications can be used on several different computers while the users’ application settings will follow.

How does it work?

To realize those benefits, Scense adds a number of possibilities to Altiris SVS, to manage and control the applications and the user session.
