Hi Leslie, thank you for the PDF and ppt ... Both have been very helpful in getting an insight into a migration.
Have a question though ....
If for a new deployment ... across 4 sites all interconnected via good wan links....I have planned to have one sepm and dedicated SQL on master / main site and then have GUP on the remaining three sites to serve their local users / clients... Do you think I should place a SQL at each site with a sepm ??

Data between sepm's is only delta updates.
You can select what needs to be replicated. placing sql on all the sites is not necessary.
