Supported Upgrade paths to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1

Jun 29, 2011 08:39 AM

Updated on 20th Nov'12

Hello,

Information is needed on the supported upgrade paths when migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP)12.1

However always refer specific version release notes and system requirements prior to an upgrade.

 RU is Release Update version& MP is Maintenance Pack. The MP need to be installed to the same version of RU.

SEP 12.1 have two types:

 •  12.1 Enterprise Edition (EE)

 •  12.1 Small Business Edition (SBE)

Two most common migrated path (however few exceptions are there)

  •  SEP 11.x Enterprise Edition  -->  SEP 12.1 Enterprise Edition

(SEP 11.x.RU1, RU2, RU3 , RU4, RU5, RU6 --> SEP 12.1--> Supported )

( SEP 11 RU7  --> SEP 12.1 --> Not supported )

( SEP 11 RU7 --> SEP 12.1 RU1 --> Supported )

• Small Business Edition 12.0 -->  Small Business Edition 12.1

All versions of Symantec Sygate Enterprise Protection up to 5.1 up to Release Update 9 Maintenance Patch 5 (MR9 MP5) can be migrated to version 12.1. Releases later than 5.1 MR9 MP5 cannot be migrated to 12.1.

This restriction does not affect client versions.

Crossgrade upgrade

  •  SEP SBE12.0 -->  SEP EE 12.1
  •  SEP SBE 12.1 --> SEP EE 12.1

  Legacy product

  • SAV 9x &  10.x / SCS 2.x & 3.x / SSEP (Sygate) 5.1 --> SEP EE 12.1

  Unsupported migration path :

  •  From SEP Enterprize Edition --> SEP Small Business Edition

  License Update actions during upgrade

SEP EE  11.x > SEP EE 12.1 (EE upgrade)
 adds and activate upgrade license

SEP SBE 12.0 > SEP SBE 12.1 (SBE Upgrade)
  Keeps the same license

SEP SBE 12.x > SEP 12.1 (EE upgrade)
   Remove old licenses, adds and activates upgrade license

SEP Upgrade overview

SEPM upgrade is a two way process, performed by

 •  SEP 12.1 installation wizard

 •  Management server upgrade wizard

First server upgrades the database,Other server update server settings only if there are multiple SEPM's

Upgrade process is very simple, just few clicks & you are good to go with new SEP 12.1

Exceptions for an upgrade:

The 11.0 RU7, RU7 MP1, and RU7 MP2 SEPM contains SQL schema changes that are newer than the schema used by 12.1. For this reason, migrations from certain 11.0 RU7 to 12.1 versions are not supported, and are prevented by the installer.

Migration support for 11.0.7000.975 (RU7) to 12.1 is present in 12.1.1000.157 (RU1) or higher.

Migration support for 11.0.7101.1056 (RU7 MP1) and 11.0.7200.1147 (RU7 MP2) to 12.1 is not currently available. A future release of the 12.1 product (12.1 RU2) will contain support for additional migration scenarios.

Chetan,

PResently we are using SEP 11.7Mp2,As there seems to be lot of vulnerabilities coming up, we would need to upgrade to either 11.0.7 MP3 or 12.1 RU2. Now, when upgraded to 11.0.7 MP3, is it possible to upgrade to 12.1RU2 at a latest stage (is that upgrade path supported) or do we need to wait for 12.1RU3.

Nov 28, 2012 11:56 PM

Cool, many thanks Chetan.

So in this case I will have to select the No reboot deployment so that it can be done later by the user when they logged off.

I'm trying to minimize the user complaint during the day when they are prompted to reboot.

Nov 20, 2012 09:36 AM

Hi,

I have tested now & result says reboot is must to upgrade to RU2.

This is how I tested

"I installed RU2 package over SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1 client by selecting no reboot required option. After successful deployment of new package, GUI was displaying reboot is pending & version was not updated. After reboot SEP version upgraded & no more reboot was pending"

Hope it helps.

Nov 19, 2012 06:22 PM

Many thanks Chetan !

please let us know how did you go with it.

Nov 19, 2012 05:50 AM

Hi John,

You can upgrade from SEP v 12.1 RU1 MP1 to SEP 12.1 RU2 without server reboot.

However let me test it & get back to you.

Nov 18, 2012 10:44 PM

Hi,

Can I upgrade my current SEP client v 12.1 RU1 MP1 on my production server without reboot ?

Oct 17, 2012 02:02 AM

Hi Dwayne,

There are many differences between Enterprise Edition and Small Business Edition.

I have tried to list down them as per my understanding.

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/feature-comparison-between-sep-121-sbe-and-ee

I believe there is a cost difference also between these two products.

SBE has very limited features compared to EE.

Oct 16, 2012 02:01 PM

That is unfortunate, and quite frustrating!  I have a range of small business clients for whom I have implemented SCS, and then SEP, as the products evolved.  The number of times I have had to completely 'remove and re-deploy' to solve issues with a "broken" product is arguably unacceptable.   Now that you have a product that really is more oriented to my clients, 'small' business, I had thought I would start moving them all over.  This makes me think twice.

I guess it's my own fault for not reading 'docs' more thoroughly, but I assumed it wasn't really a different product, give the name seems pretty much the same.   As I would imagine there are a lot more "small" businesses out there with SEP "EE", I would bet there will be many others wishing to "downgrade" in the near future!  Perhaps the target client for SBE is not profitable enough to warrant some development time to "import" policies from "EE"??

Thanks for your response.

Hi,

As you know downgrade from Enterprise Edition to Small Business Edition is not supported.

You will have to uninstall SEPM and SEP client completely prior to install SBE version.

You can not import EE policies into a new install of SBE.

Oct 15, 2012 04:32 PM

I have to 'downgrade' from SEP 12.1 "EE" to SEP 12.1 "SBE".  Looks lik this path is not supported, so how can I save some trouble getting my Central exceptions, and other policies into a new install of "SBE"?  Can SBE import "EE" policies?

And will I have to reinstall client on all 12 nodes, as well as the server, etc??

Sep 03, 2012 04:56 AM

Just to add...

If anyone is planning to upgrade from SEP 11.x version to 12.1RU1MP1.

The path for upgrade: 11.x >> 12.1RU1 >> 12.1RU1MP1

Hi,

You will have to take a backup of replication server before upgrade.

Upgrade your replication server to 12.1

Initiate replication with primary server

Sep 05, 2011 05:27 AM

Hi,

My Site I am Running with SEPM MR4 and almost 3500 Clients are connected with Server.

We Planned to move Some clients from  SEPM MR4 Server  to another which is in another Network. Created one Replication Server and Set the Priority 1 to New replication Server and Priority 2 for Existing SEPM. So the Group where we changed the priority are communicating  with Replication Server and the GUP configured for the group is providing the update for those moved clients.

We need to Upgrade SEPM MR4 to SEPM 12.1.On test setup (where replication was not configured) we upgraded the version. The clients even with old versions are communicating and updating definition from this 12. 1 server on test.

So after Primary Server version  upgrade, is it need to take the backup of replication server for version SEPM 12 .1 upgrade ? Or is it enough to run a  replication partner on Primary Server ? Which method have to follow to upgrade my replication Server version and maintain the communication Def updates of clients. We are  planning only SEPM version upgradation and planning client upgarde on a later stage.

regards

Biju

Hi,

SEP 11.x is paper license product. So in SEPM console you can't check status of your licenses.

Check with your paper license or call license department (18003420652)

SEP 12.1 is software license product.

You can upgrade directly from SEP 11..4202.75 to SEP 12.1 if you have valid support.

Sep 01, 2011 09:07 AM

Can someone tell me where I can find the license information on version 11.0.4202.75 and also is there an upgrade path to 12.1?

Thanks!

That cleared my doubt.

Hi,

All the releases till RU6 MP3 can be migrated to version 12.1

11.x.RU1, RU2, RU3, RU4, RU5, RU6 --> 12.1--> Supported migration path

You are using 11.0.5002.333 i.e RU5 so it is supported migration path

Releases later than RU6 MP3 can not be migrated to version 12.1

It means, RU7 --> 12.1 not supported at this point.

I hope it will clear all doubts !!!

Aug 12, 2011 02:12 AM

Hi,

Im still bothered with this article that you posted:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/upgrade-paths-sep-121amber:

....

"Note : All versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager up to Release Update 6 Maintenance Patch 3 (RU6 MP3) can be migrated to version 12.1. Releases later than RU6 MP3 cannot be migrated."

My SEPM version is still 11.0.5002.333(RU5), and as mentioned above, releases later than RU6 MP3 cannot be migrated. I'm just afraid if the upgrade fails..

Any adivse is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Geneviere

It's supported migration path.

My SEPM version is 11.0.5002.333, can i upgrade directly to SEPM 12.1?

Thanks,

Hi,

SEPM is not base on 32 bit or 64 bit operating system.

It get directly install irrespective of type operating system.

Hi,

Check this article:

Upgrading and migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH163602

Jul 12, 2011 02:35 PM

Will SEPM 11.x installed on a Windows 2008 R2 server be upgraded to 64-bit SEPM? I didn't see anything asking during the upgrade. Is SEPM 64-bit yet?

Jul 12, 2011 02:22 PM

Is there a white paper on this?

Jul 12, 2011 05:36 AM

Hi,

You can upgrade directly to 12.1 even though your SEPM is on 11.0.6300.803 & SEP clients on 11.0.6300.803, 11.0.6005.562, 11.0.4014.26.

SEP 11.x & SEP 12.1 are two different products.

For SEP 11 RU6 MP3 upgrade path is  11.x -->RU6/RU6a-->RU6MP3

For SEP 12.1 upgrate path is SEP11.x --> SEP 12.1 EE

Jul 11, 2011 03:23 PM

I have the following, can you confirm everything can upgrade directly to 12.1?

SEPM 11.0.6300.803

SEP clients 11.0.6300.803, 11.0.6005.562, 11.0.4014.26

I'm told I can't upgrade 11.0.4014.26 directly to 11.0.6300.803 so now I'm exploring if I can upgrade all clients and SEPM directly to 12.1.

Thanks

Jul 01, 2011 11:01 AM

Hi,

Stick to RU6 MP3 & then upgrade to 12.1.

SEP 12.1 RTM will come very soon.

Jun 30, 2011 04:05 PM

You can't upgrade RU7 SEPM to 12.1 at this point.  For that upgrade path you would need to wait for SEP12.1 RU1.

You could however manage RU7 clients with a SEP12.1 SEPM and upgrade them to 12.1.

SEP12.1 should be GA before SEP11 RU7.

Jun 30, 2011 02:41 PM

So I'm on RU6 MP3 right now. Should I not upgrade to RU7 when it comes out??
