Symantec Messaging Gateway v/s Symantec Mail Security for Exchange- Which solution is the right one for my organization?

Jun 07, 2012 08:08 AM

I keep hearing this question ever so often and thought it might be a good idea to pen down my few words of wisdom. To start with let us assume that we are looking at a fairly large enterprise with sufficient number of users to justify investment in a Secured Mail Gateway. I must add that the introduction of a soft appliance has reduced the CAPEX significantly, however if you are running a Microsoft Exchange Server with 100 users you might still just want to use SMS for Exchange.

Let us start with the Gateway Offering- Symantec Messaging Gateway as this is the most feature rich mail security offering from Symantec. SMG provides a gamut of Anti Spam technologies.

  • Adaptive Reputation- Manual, Self Learning Local, Global, and Third Party Blacklists, Manual, Self Learning Fast Pass, Global and Third Party Whitelists.
  • Self Learning Local blacklist saves bandwidth by throttling connections from spammers where as Self Learning Fastpass saves resources by bypassing spam filtering for clean senders.
  • Signature and Heuristics based Antispam Engine capable of Message Body & Attachment Signature based Analysis, Fuzzy Body Hash Analysis, URL Filtering, Message Header, Content, Language, Structural, and Image Analysis.
  • Bounce Attack Prevention.
  • SPF, SenderID, DKIM, and Reverse DNS validation capabilities.
  • Language based filtering.

SMG provides best in the industry Antivirus with zero day suspicious attachment detection and bloodhound heuristic capabilities apart from the signature based virus detection.

The Antispam and Antivirus signatures are updated automatically in real time.

SMG also provides comprehensive Content Filtering and Data Loss Prevention capabilities with a lot of out of the box policies to meet your regulatory and compliance requirements.

Finally SMG can be integrated with Symantec DLP, PGP Universal Gateway, and Symantec Content Encryption Solutions.

In shot SMG offers everything that you would want from a perimeter Email Gateway.

So does this mean that SMG is the way to go for large enterprises. Not quite as there are a few interesting capabilities that SMS for Exchange offers. Let uss look at a few

  • Virus Filtering for internal Emails.
  • Integration with Exchange Junkmail via SCL values
  • Content Filtering for internal Emails.
  • Scanning of mailboxes with new virus signatures.
  • Removing unwanted content from mailboxes based on content policies.
  • Remove sensitive content distributed accidently from mailboxes.
  • Reply All Mailstorm and internal outbreak detection and containment.
  • Ensuring Clean Backups.

You might want to take a look at the following article written by me earlier: -

So we can conclude that both these products complement each other with their capabilities. While some of their capabilities overlap, others are unique. Deploying and configuring these capabilities correctly will ensure a truly secured email environment.

Hello,
I think there is also from a customer perspective quite a bit of an input necessary as it always depends on what security level you want to achieve and what is your strategy in terms of infrastructure.
If you have a simple Exchange Organisation with an Edge server receiving mails on the edge from the Internet you would never think of a SMG on your boarder, except you want to achieve some parts to be independent from a plain Microsoft implementation. When you have actually a kind of backend system that can be Application severs, Exchange, Notes and want to have a secure way of hand over emails from the Internet, than actually the SMG might be a good product for it.
So the question you mentioned is really driven on the corporate strategy.
What I can mention from the security aspect as a customer is that the mix of both is quite perfect as you can perform regular checks on the backend to make sure that your back ends are clean what is actually really important as nothing is worse than to clean Information Stores from Malware, whatever Exchange we ae talking about.
Furthermore having a kind of store and forward with some fundamentals necessarily in terms of mail threats today the SMG is quite useful to actually take care of messages once these are enter your corporate boarder.
I think also in the SMSMSE 7 there are quite more improvements about the issues mentioned by you in terms of DLP and malware detection by heuristic and suspicious files/urls etc.
So the real question for customers would be more... What and where do I want to move with my mail service, if it's not already in the cloud?
Exchange and Notes is quite fundamental and in most of the License bundles included as well technically more user oriented, but when I do want more in terms of SMTP, then SMG is absolutely a plus to achieve these goals.
Cheers

"Thumbs up" from me.

One note:

> Integration with Exchange Junkmail via SCL values

SMSMSE uses the latest Brightmail technology to fight spam.  Spam can be deleted, sent to alternate addresses, sent to a junk mail folder, have its subject line altered, almost anything.  It's quite versatile and powerful.  These articles may be of interest:
