Three Ways to Collect Drivers from a Machine Utilizing HIIS

I could not find anything already on Symantec in regards to working with HIIS so here you go!

Scenario 1: A PC that already has the correct operating system and drivers installed.

Technique 1: Take a few minutes to put an AClient onto the system. Once it appears in the DS, you can refresh classes in HIIS. If the new PC shows up in already collected (green) class, you can move straight to deployment. If the new PC shows up in a new and/or uncollected class (black or blue) you will need to add this computer as a candidate and run a collect on the system. Once the drivers have been collected, you can deploy the HIIS image.

Scenario 2: A PC that has no OS, or an OS that is not properly driver-equipped, or has the wrong OS.

Technique 1: For this technique, the model of the new PC needs to be a well-represented model in HIIS (at least 1, but preferably more already collected compatibility classes), and the DS needs to reliably be able to get the model from the System Management BIOS (SMBIOS). To determine this, you can PXE boot the new system. This will cause the new PC to show up in DS under “New Computers” with its Mac Address as the name. You can right-click this PC and go to properties, and check that the DS has the proper model name by going into the hardware tab and reading under “Model.”

If these prerequisites are met you can use the HIIS Initial Deployment Jobs, which are created under the Export Tab in HIIS. These initial deployment jobs will add drivers to a system based upon the Manufacturer and Model that DS will pull from the SMBIOS. HIIS creates a meta-pack of drivers, which will include all the drivers from all the collected classes assigned to that model. Then, you can be reasonably sure that most of the critical drivers for this PC will be included when it is imaged.

Technique 2: This technique uses a Virtual Managed Computer in DS in order to assign a computer to a certain class ahead of time. The idea is that we will create a node in the DS for this computer manually, and then we can add it to HIIS before the computer is even turned on.
To create the Virtual Managed Computer:

•Open the Deployment Console and go to the File menu
•Select New -> Computer
•Click the Add Button

From here you have to setup a Name, Mac Address, and Computer Name for the system. The system will be recognized later by the Mac Address so make sure that it is correct. You can fill in any other information you may have available, including domain, License Key, etc.

Now, you can refresh your classes in HIIS, and the newly created computer will show up in a blank class (no manufacturer or model). From here, you can right click the computer and select “Send to Class” and then assign the computer to a class which has already been collected for the same model.

From here, you can connect the new computer and use either standard or initial deployment, since the computer already has an associated class.

This method has the benefit that you can setup names and other information for a new system before you have even booted it up.
