Troubleshooting Symantec Boot Services (SBS – PXE) - Port Binding with TCPView

Dec 06, 2011 12:37 PM

There are times when a client cannot PXE boot and the error messages thrown out are very hard to interpret.  Following is a guide on how to use Microsoft’s TCPView for windows to validate port binding to the SBS-PXE server:

1.To start download TCPView from here

TCPView is a Windows program that will show you detailed listings of all TCP and UDP endpoints on your system, including the owning process name, remote address and state of TCP connections

2. Make sure SBS PXE Services are started

3. Launch TCPView. The first time it will display TCPView License Agreement Click Agree

4.TCPView Starts – Press Ctrl-R to not resolve names

5.  Verify TCPView has the following processes started:

SbsMtftp.exe:ProcessID, UDP, Local Address:69, Remote address *.*
SbsServer.exe ProcessID, UDP, LocalAddress:67, *.*
SbsServer.exe ProcessID, UDP, LocalAddress:4011, *.*
If ports 69, 67, and 4011 are used by other executables other than SBS-PXE clients will not PXE boot. Same if the ports are not bound to the SBS-PXE services at all.
