Upgrade to Intel AMT 6.2 for Host Based Configuration

Sep 01, 2011 04:07 PM

If you have Dell or Lenovo client systems with Intel AMT version 6, firmware updates are available to make these systems host based configuration capable.

If you are new to the Host Based Configuration concept, please see http://www.symantec.com/connect/articles/intel-amt-7-introduces-host-based-configuration.    (For a specific example of client control mode configuration followed by integration to an Altiris environment, see part 5 of the video series starting at http://www.symantec.com/connect/videos/part-1-configure-intel-amt-integrating-altiris)

On the Dell systems - the latest BIOS will automatically update\enable the functionality.   You are ready to configure the system in Client Control Mode (Need more information on this topic? Use SCS 7.1)

For Lenovo systems, the process is a little more involved:

  1. Update to the latest BIOS
  2. Update to the latest Intel AMT firmware release (in my experience, the MEUPDATE.CMD file worked best)
  3. Enable host based based configuration via WMI-based BIOS settings script

More details on the 3rd step for Lenovo systems:

  • Review documentation at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-68488
  • Per the documentation, create ListAll.vbs
  • Run cscript ListAll.vbs on client system.   Output will include two datapoints of interest.   The second item may not be accessible in the actual Lenovo BIOS screens.
    • AMTcontrol = Enable
    • HostBasedConfiguration = Disable
  • Per the documentation, create setconfig.vbs
  • Run cscript setconfig HostBasedConfiguration Enable and ensure a success

The Lenovo system with Intel AMT 6.2 is now ready for Host Based Configuration
