I was getting an error during set up of a Service Desk that I was not able to send emails.

The fix from my Server admin was the folowing steps
Step1:
Confirm that you can open a telnet connection to your SMTP gateway on port 25.
If you receive a message that states that you could not open a connection, there is probably a firewall blocking the outbound connection. Open up McAfee VirusScan console and check the “Access Protection” task.
If the option to “Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail” is enabled, then outbound mail is not possible.
