Wise SetupCapture Quick Start Guide
I have seen a lot of Juice Articles about creating, editing, and modifying MSI installers. But I have not seen one that explains how to use Wise SetupCapture to capture an install of any application, or any change to a computer for that matter, into an MSI installer. If you have Deployment Server, you have Wise SetupCapture in the Wise folder of your eXpress share. I have written this short article as a quick start guide to using Wise SetupCapture.
- You must start with a clean install of your operating system with no applications installed. It is recommended to create an image of your clean operating system so that you can deploy this image (rather than re-installing the operating system) prior to each setup capture you will perform.
- Click Start > Run, enter "\\<YourDeploymentServer>\eXpress\Wise Packager\Wise SetupCapture.lnk" and click OK.
Note: Replace <YourDeploymentServer> with the name or IP of your Deployment Server. - Choose Create a new installation and type in "\\<YourDeploymentServer>\eXpress\<InstallDirectory>\<InstallName>.msi" and then click Next, Next, and then Next.
Note: Replace <YourDeploymentServer>, <InstallDirectory>, and <InstallName> with the name or IP of your Deployment Server, the directory you keep you installers in, and the name of the installer you want to create, respectively. - Wise SetupCapture will now scan the computer's files and registry. When it has finished, you will see the Execute Installation screen. Now install the application you want to package as you normally would install it. If you need to reboot, just leave the Execute Installation screen open when you reboot and it will re-open when the computer comes back up ready to continue. Reboot as many times as you need to and make as many changes to your computer as you want.
- When you are finished installing your application, click Next, and then Next.
- Wise SetupCapture will now scan the computer for file and registry changes.
When it has finished, you will see the Finish screen. Click Finish.
- You now have an install package that contains all the installations and changes you made to the computer in the location you specified in step 3.
- After the MSI has been created, you can use the Windows Installer Editor to make any changes to the MSI.

Yes!!!!!!!!!
We have been installing packages with RIP but have a complicated way to uninstall them and this could just be that solution that we are looking for!!!!!!
Great help
We have been using Rips also and have a new software package that is kinda large and has caused us some issues when trying to create a RIP we will try this next week.
Nope
Like so many other things with Altiris products, they rarely work the first time.
One thing it advertizes is that if the application asks for a reboot, the Wise capture setup will be available to finish its capture. This has never happened. So, I tried not to reboot. No .msi created.
Maybe this is happening because I'm trying to capture an update to an existing installation of an application. If it can't do that, then I need to find some other way.
Trouble and zero size files
I have had a lot of trouble with the wise setup capture. for a SMALL patch it works ok. I some times don't get any results. zero size file. if it is a big install, it doesn't finish or misses some of the install files. rebooting never works for me either. Any one else have these problems?
Hey MarcG, This can
Hey MarcG,
This can definitely be annoying although it should work! There is an easy workaround however if it doesn't start automagically.
Go to start > programs > start up and launch "wise setup capture restart" it will then restart the capture from the same place.
Cheers,
David
