WoL Not Working on Dell Models 760, 780, 960 and 990

Feb 01, 2012 04:41 PM

I was having problems using the task "WoL" on the following Dell models: Optiplex 760, 780, 960 and 990.

So after testing from the Altiris Console with no success, I use a third party app, running from the same subnet as the clients, to eliminate the possibility that the wol package is not getting to the clients computers. That still didn't work, so I start to research if the Dell models we have in our environment have any problems with wol.

So after some research and testing I found that changing the following settings will make wol start to work (remember this works on Windows 7, I haven't test in Windows XP):

- if you go to Device Manager -- Network Card Properties

- on the Advanced TAB -- find the info “Enable PME” – make sure to set this to Enabled (this option normally will make WoL start to work on Windows 7 Computers)

If wol still not working add the following settings:

- Go to Device Manager -- Network Card Properties

- Go to “Power Management” TAB – make sure “Allow this device to wake the computer” is checked

- Make sure you are using a newer BIOS version from Dell

- Go to the BIOS, under “Power Management”
  - "Low Power Mode" - make sure to uncheck [enable Low Power Mode]
  - "Remote Wake Up" - make sure to select either [Enable] or [Enable with Boot to NIC]

- Go to the BIOS, under “System Configuration”
  - “Integrated NIC” - make sure to check [Enable with PXE]

The link below have a list of Intel card that this rule is applied, also it explain what PME (Power Management Event) do:
