Workflow Designer |
Workflow is a term used for a business process requiring multiple parties and multiple technologies to accomplish a task. |
Component |
Workflow Designer |
In terms of this solution, a component is an object that accomplishes a discreet task. A component performs its job standing alone. Example: a Send Email component can work without any dependencies on other components. However, a component is most useful when combined with other components to accomplish a task. In workflow, Send Email would be one action within a business process. The Altiris equivalent is a task - incremental pieces of works can link tasks into a job. |
Workflow Designer |
Workflow Solution |
A GUI based development tool that allows its user to configure components to build a business process. Workflow Designer encompasses the full software development cycle, from defining the process to deployment. |
Workflow Designer Studio |
Workflow Designer |
Lets you manage, create, and edit workflow projects. Workflow Designer Studio also lets you select global settings and set tool preferences. |
Workflow Server |
Workflow Solution |
The execution environment for applications built using Workflow Designer. This publishes workflow projects to Workflow Solution. This is a standard Web server. |
Items |
Altiris Platform |
Any object persisted in the CMDB (Example: policies, folders, and computers that allow resources managed). Each item has a Name, Description, GUID, and Attributes and can be cloned, imported, exported, presented, and secured (security). Items can be linked as references or named relations between two items.
An object with more behavioral qualities. |
Resources |
Altiris Platform |
Physical objects that can be managed by the system. A resource can be a computer, a device, a person, printers, routers, contracts, software packages, and so forth. Resources are composed of three things: Resource Type, Data Classes (specific data relevant to a resource type), and Associations (relationships between resources, Example: User to Company, each resource can have multiple relationships (0 to 1, exactly 1, 0 to many, 1 to many)). All resources are items.
An object focused on data and behavior. |
UI Framework |
Altiris Platform |
A mechanism for displaying information about a solution and collecting user input. Consists of controls, pages, and web services to construct new, consistent user interfaces. |
Altiris Platform Services |
Altiris Platform |
Allows a solution to perform certain functions or relate to other solutions in a standard way.
- Software Delivery - Allows software to be bundled into a package, advertised as available, and delivered to a resource.
- Inventory - A service that intermittently collects data about a resource (most often an inventory of computer hardware and software) and stores that data in the Notification Database for use by other resources or services.
- Messaging - A server based messaging service that a resource can subscribe to. A subscriber listens for a relevant message and may take actions based on the message received.
- Policies - A set of rules or regulatory information controlling how clients interact with servers. Example: frequency of when information is sent to a server.
- Report Engine - A service that lets users define the information to be included in a report. The engine uses custom SQL queries, combined with parameters given by a user to retrieve and present information in a grid.
- Scheduling - A service allowing the scheduling of events. Example: monitoring performance, running reports, and updating clients on some frequency.
- Alerts - A notification service that informs the appropriate party when intervention is needed. This notice is routed to a distributing manager.
|
Collection |
Altiris Platform |
A grouping of items, resources, or collections. |
Altiris Agents |
Altiris Platform |
Objects, residing on a client computer, that communicate with the Notification Server in order to perform services. Examples: inventory scan and pulling policies and packages from the Notification Server. |
Task |
Altiris Platform |
An action performed on a collection of computers. Example: software delivery tasks (advertisements). |
Smart Task |
Altiris Platform |
An entity within Helpdesk Solution which is an action connected to an incident, but can incorporate a URL. It is created to allow users to redirect to another URL. |
