You might remember that back in May, we made an announcement focused on a new approach to help small and mid-sized organizations protect data through new delivery models.  Our Backup Exec software has long been an industry leader in data protection.  But we are increasingly hearing that our customers need a choice in how they manage their backup environment.  Enter Symantec Backup – a new delivery model that lets our customers leverage the industry leading Backup Exec technology in a cloud service model.

In September, we began offering Backup ( through a pilot offer with Synnex US and Ingram Micro.  Some of our partners have been able to offer their customers, enabling us to collect valuable feedback and enabling we meet partner and customer needs.  And now, customers can purchase directly through the Symantec eStore, so our SMB customers can now purchase it easily to automatically backup and restore their data with our cloud-based solution.

Automatically.  That is the key.  We know that many small businesses don’t have a dedicated IT staff, but need their data protected without requiring too much of their time.  With a cloud-based approach, the burden of managing the solution is greatly reduced because backups can be automated and the ongoing maintenance of the service is the responsibility of the provider.  Users only need to log on, deploy agents, and set up their backup requirements.  Once that is completed, the service runs in the background storing the customer’s data in Symantec’s secure, off-site data centers.

We’ve made some other important updates to our backup portfolio over the past few weeks.  As part of our original announcement in May, we laid out our plan to offer a choice for backup – whether that is as traditional software, as an appliance, and as a cloud-based solution.  In addition to today’s updates around, we recently announced the availability of the Backup Exec 3600 and NetBackup 5220 appliances, as well as updates to Backup Exec 2010, our traditional software offering.  In the coming months, we also have plans to make Backup more widely available through our channel.  We know this solution will be an important tool in ensuring our small business customers’ data is protected, secure, and available.
