1603 msiexec Failure When Doing a Remote Client Install

Oct 29, 2008 12:05 PM

I ran across this issue the other day with a customer who was trying to do a remote client install onto one of his machines. The install failed with the error code mentioned in the title.

Usually the error code is a result of trying to install a client over the top of a previous installation of the client but that was not the case in this instance.

What I discovered was the customer had Norton Ghost installed on his target client. After uninstalling Norton Ghost, the remote client went through without a hitch.

I am not sure exactly why this would fail unless the GSS console recognizes installations of Norton Ghost as clients. Which seems to be the obvious reason. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thank you!

Hello balrob,
Sorry for not mentioning the versions. Norton Ghost 12.0 and Symantec Ghost client version 11.5.0.2141.

Yes, the two Ghosts are completely different, so different in fact that there *should* be no interaction between them - at least no more than any two applications picked randomly (which means there is still room for a compatibility problem).
I have both a GSS client and a Norton Ghost client on one of my test machines and both work fine.
dirk69er, you don't say which version of either is being used ?
Also, this is a very lightly used Symantec Ghost forum - which I think we should use for tips & tricks. There is a *very* active peer support forum with many references to "msiexec 1603" - which is here: https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board?board.id=109
cheers

Norton Ghost and the Symantec Ghost Solution Suite are in different product families and based on different technologies, but there is some redundancy here, and that is the issue. Norton Ghost starting with 9.x (if I remember correctly) is based on the Powerquest technology, whereas GSS is based on traditional Ghost technology. The isse is that the redundancy and the differences together make them a bad fit for the same machine. One needs to be completely uninstalled for the other to be installed. I would uninstall the Norton Ghost and then delet the Program Files folder for it, and then go after the registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE for it.
