Altiris Software Virtualization Solution Portable? How about Ceedo?

I would like (as many others out there) to have the Altiris Software Virtualization Solution Admin on a USB stick.

I have recently seen the solution posted by "erikw" (SVS4USB Admin) and it is great, but you must have a USB stick that is U3 enabled.

With the software called Ceedo (www.ceedo.com) you can install applications on EVERY USB stick (and I suppose also on USB external hard disks) not only those that are U3 enabled!

I tried Ceedo with Altiris and it works.... But not completely.

So, if there is someone out there interested in it, now I will explain how to install Altiris in a USB stick with Ceedo hoping that someone will help me get it fully working.

These are the steps to install SVS Admin on a USB stick:

  1. Install Ceedo www.ceedo.com with the add-on called Argo. Argo is used to install software on the USB with Ceedo.
  2. With Argo, create a shortcut to cmd.exe (C:\windows\system32). Now you have a cmd icon in the Ceedo ambient
  3. Run cmd.exe from the Ceedo
  4. Install SVS from the prompt with:
    msiexec.exe /qn /i c:\Software_Virtualization_Agent.msi PRODUCT_KEY="your product key" INSTALL_ADMIN=1 REBOOT=ReallySuppress
(Don't install SVS with Argo, it doesn't work)
  5. Wait wait wait...

Ok! Now you have SVS on the USB stick:

Now here is the problem:

-You can import VSA files or delete them but: you can't activate them on a PC without SVS installed on it.

If Altiris is installed, you can activate the SVA normally.

I suppose this is due to the fact that the Altiris services aren't loaded from the USB stick. Except for this, it works.

Thanks

There are many tools that can do this, but the problem with Ceedo is that it uses the normal registry.

U3 uses VOS to create its own registry. VOS stands for Virtual Operating System.

Changing the real registry for a virtualized one needs editing in the real SVS, and that is not allowed because of the patents.

I have SVS ready for a USB stick. It works great, but I encounter a problem with resetting the layer.

It terminates with error message 1086.
Still working very hard to find that one.

Erik

Does this new process allow me to run layers from my USB?

I would really like to be able to plug in my USB and have layers that I created running from it...

There is another possible solution. Moka5 is a product that lets you run a VMware virtual machine on a USB device. It can be downloaded at www.moka5.com. It is a free product. There is also mojopac at www.mojopac.com. It may also work. It costs money like Ceedo, but you can download a 30 day free trial.

Thanks kenwstrong for information in your post, I see the moka5 products and seems to be interesting for portable virtual machine in a USB stick memory.

I'd like to mention also there are a large collection of different VM (included a PocketDemocracy VM...).

Yes,

It allows you to create and import layers. Your SVS and all the layers are on the USB stick. Inserting the stick will activate the driver, and all your layers will be available.

You can activate and deactivate your layers.

You can even choose what layers will activate immediately after inserting the stick.

The only thing I already mentioned is the problem in resetting.

Sounds like you're more after a product such as

"Package your software into a single EXE that runs in user-mode without installation or changes to the local desktop's registry and file system."

Packaging in a single EXE does not work because you first need to start the filter driver.

But yes, all data and registry settings need to be taken from the original, because you do not want to leave traces on a PC where you used your SVS stick.

Erik I am very interested in your progress with using U3. Are you any further forward? Is there somewhere I can watch your progress? I looked at your website but couldn't make much out a I can only read English!

I will post more info on my website.

By the way, on the top of the website there is a button that you can set to English, and 50% is already translated in your language.

The product is almost ready. I have some slight troubles, that needs to be solved. I keep in touch with all of you.

I use Ceedo and my impression is very positive about it. It costs something but results are every time as expected. No strange issues or installation failed and the support is good.

I have tried to create a complete working bootable USB key leveraging BartPE's, Windows XP and some other tools. Basically allowing you to just boot off the USB and have a complete desktop of working apps and data. I haven't had the time to go back to trying some of the other solutions above but it does give me hope that I think this can be done. My goal was do something similar to what Sun Microsystems CEO envisioned years ago. I think with SVS and some of the contributers here it definitely can be a reality. I plan to try some of these other solutions and see if I can get it to work. I got as far as actually having the SVS Admin tool load but it was having issues building anything.
