Announcement: New Rewards Point System
New Symantec Rewards Point Structure
We are excited to announce a new point structure for the Symantec Connect Rewards program. This new point structure is the result of feedback from you, the users.
No longer is there a maximum number of points that you can earn when you contribute to the community. And no longer will the community managers be responsible for determining the number of points you will receive per content item. Also, you’ll find that content that is of little value to the community is no longer given the same weight as valuable solutions and information.
Beginning today, Monday, 11 May, 2009, you will receive a baseline number of points for each contribution you make, and the community itself will determine the total number of points you will receive for your contribution. When another community member finds your content valuable, he or she can give it a “thumbs up” vote. Each thumbs up vote will add points to your account. (Although they are tallied, thumbs down votes will not subtract points from your account.) Thus, the more people who find the content you contribute valuable, the more points you can earn.
The points you have earned before today will remain valid.
You can find a chart of the point values below:
Finally!
Finally the voting system actually means something and provides feedback and credit to the authors. A much needed change. On the other end, it is unfortunate that the minimal points previously given for casting a vote have gone away. Users lose some of the incentive to actually provide feedback. Didn't that max out at five rewarded votes a day anyways?
How about giving points for
How about giving points for the voter to give an incentive to vote. :D
The same 0.5 will probably do.
Please consider using the "mark as solution" and "voting" option
Using these will help other users who are searching and filtering on "solved" threads and have similar questions.
thank you,
Eric

Confusion
Whats the meaning of contributing an idea How do i post it....!
@G_70508
Sorry about that. THe "ideas" content will be released in an upcoming release of Connect. I overlooked that I had left that in when I posted the chart. You will soon be able to suggest an idea for the prodcut development teams, letting them know an idea you have for enhancing a specific product. This willbe available soon. Sorry for the confusion.
hi; idea concept is now
hi;
idea concept is now released.
what it is:> any idea or suggestion about any symantec product; process etc. . that you think will advance symantec.
where to locate:>"Ideas" tab near "Groups" tab
how to create Idea:>on upper right corner you will find create menu; click on that and then click on idea. . .
So points have gone down very
So points have gone down very much.
any way it's ok for me but when we post an article we don't get points imidietly and it takes more than a week. people respond to that article but no points for too long creating a confusion whether it has been approved or not. so look for that.
and you should have some restrictions on registration process as non symantec users may create account and make useless posts for points. yoiu should use product sl no mandatory for registration.
this forum should be for the guys who are actually using symantec product and facing problem in the product. not for other vendor users who use this forum as point making system.
@Bijay!
Thanks for your suggestions. We will definitely try to speed up our process of approving the Connect content. But, FYI, this is a busy community and have people posting lot of content everyday. So, at times you can expect some delays..just like the flight delays ;-).....so please consider that. And, that the Community Manager has the reponsibilty to inform the user about the approval/denial, you can sit back and wait for the call from us.
And, our new point system helps to tame down the gamers of the community. People would get points only when their content gets "voted" and not by just "posting".
@Bijay.Swain - re: "non
@Bijay.Swain - re: "non symantec users may create account and make useless posts for points." - I'm sure the admins will take care of that. I'd like to hear what AV is on the other side of the fence and see how we fare against them. I'd say bring it - competition is healthy (read: good for the end users) ;)
- re: "use product sl" - I like it the way it is. how about ordinary users from companies who knows something about the product or would like to ask questions?. Some of us would probably be changing to AVs depending on the company's wants. That doesn't mean we're cutting you off on what we know.
yes approving an article
yes approving an article takes much long time
it should be fast enough so that evryone can post comment immediately on it
Are the points going to be
Are the points going to be back dated on previous posts as I have things that were marked as solution but only got 5 points for them.
1 Point for a comment is a bit low dont you think? This is putting me off contributing as there is no garantee someone will mark a correct post as a solution.

The new system was put in
The new system was put in place on Monday, 11 May. Anything posted before that date was awarded points under the old system.
We hope that the original authors of a post will come back and mark any solutions that they received. Not only does this reward the solution provider, but also allows other users to more easily search for and find answers if they have similar problems. In addition, technical support and admins can mark solutions. We are going to be dedicated to marking solutions as frequently as we can.
I posted an article when 500
I posted an article when 500 points were given for an article and it was also showing 500 points pending but when i got the point after 12 th may i got only 300 points . may i know how.
Articles are reviewed and viewable only by the author until...
Hi all,
Once the article is approved for publishing, everyone can view it. However, until it is published, only the author can see it. With regard to the points being awarded days after the post - we are quite diligent with the points system, but as Swathi suggested, this is a busy community. As an example, there can be anywhere from 300 submissions needing point review and approval,, to well over 2000 submissions that we need to review!
In regard to your other question about your article, the points for various activities is UP TO (500 points for an article). Generally, we'll award 500 points for an in depth, technical article that is quite long - over 1000-1200+ words, with screen grabs, etc., Under the new system, an article of this "stature" is worth 200 total points. With the article you are asking, I gave you 300 points, which is "above" the new point total, but wasn't as long as other articles that are generally awarded the maximum 500 point total (You had roughly 700 words). Let me know if this helps clarify.
Best,
Eric

Hi Hear4U I am
Hi
Hear4U
I am fine with the points given to me .I was just checking whether this might have been done by some mistake . anyway no complains regarding points because I have never seen any tech forum awards the forum users.
Thanks again for your reply
Dear admins What about the
Dear admins What about the user who added ther comments in post Before 11th may .....
They got reawrd by old System ... . . . .Even if there answer are not usreful ........ What Will happend To that....
Vote
i would like to asked its ok that we are reward with 1 point from 1 thums Up vote But nthing is rewarded to user who voted the post .... . . . . . So no one in making effort to vote any comments .... . . ???/ plz Look for solution of it.....
but this will definately
but this will definately decrease fake user........
they will dissapointed by the new system of reward.....
keep it up......
sad to see voting points go, but probably for the best
The new point structure makes sense. The old way of giving out points for voting was just asking for trouble. Now when you see a thumbs up you can be sure that it's in response to the post and not from some guy just trying to get 0.5 pts.
But bcoz of this no one is
But bcoz of this no one is making efforts to vote any post.....
I recently discovered this
I recently discovered this whole points business when I was sent a total balance for my contributions. Upon investigation I realized I had a fairly significant balance and was a bit further motivated to keep posting.
While my posts were not motivated by greed as I was unaware of this point system I am finding dissapointed in the fact that solutions I have provided were not marked as such because that is a significant amount of points. I would feel tacky emailing the author and saying "Hey pal, would you mind clicking the solution provided button on my post so I can get points"
If the author clearly states in followup posts that the solution was provided can we ask someone at symantec to mark it as a solution?
Thanks.
@David The Community
@David
The Community Managers, the Trusted Advisors and the Moderators have the capabily to mark the post as a solution and we all do that whenever we come across such instances. And, it woudn't hurt us to have you inform us about any such posts that we might have missed from our radar :-)
And also keeping aside the points you get for marking as thread solved, since it is a more of a personal benefit, I would be looking at the benefit to the community as a whole in marking the thread as a solution because it could later benefit a user searching a sotution for a similar problem. So, please go ahead and ping your peer to remind him of the avaiable feature "Mark it as a Solution"....that way, we'd be hitting 2 birds in one shot.
Thanks,
Swathi
Please take in mind
Please take in mind that the rewards are a vary compelling way to get some money. But it is not about the money. A lot of technicians give answers on other websites also and there is no reward on them. If you contribute a lot in the Microsoft area, you can get the MVP (Most value added Professional) certificate. That is a very rare and wanted certificate.
I would trade all my points to get that kind of recognition from Symantec. I do not post for the points still I like the idea. I contribute to help people get the best out of their job.
I reallt appreciate if you all take the time to vote for a article, comment or other piece on the website. That will give the writer a much better feeling and then they really deserve the points.
So start voting if you like an article. Don't vote to fool the system. The new system will give me less points but a better feeling. I really believ that counts.
Regards
Erik

Prizes
Has anyone actually claimed and received a prize from these rewards? Just curious. :)
Thanks!
Yes
Yes, this link shows some of the discussions/bragging :)
https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/rewards-points
Good and encouraging
These are all good, healthy, and encouraging discussions - I concur to Erik, there are many forums and websites that do not reward people for helping others, but a lot of good people are so willing to help others is really a good culture.
Thanks to Symantec for the rewarding system to encourage people keep doing the good work.
Absolutely right mainly
Absolutely right mainly because of rewards the community is so active & many User giving time to solve others Query....
Send your thanxs and reward them
If you get an answer to your question, please set it as the solution. That will reward the person who gave the solution. But don't do it to just give him points. If you do so, you will give other visitors on this site a wrong idea. They read the question and then think is solved, but it isn't because you rewarded just for the points and not for the solution.
Eventually it will make connect much better because new visitors can very fast see that the question is answered correctly.
Take some time to go back in history and remark your questions as solved if they are. Even the almost three year old history of Juice and connect diserves solutions.
If you read an article that is really of interest and worth to read! Vote on it. If you browse the articles you should see many votes on good articles and a fewer votes on the not so good or absolutely bad articles.
By voting on good articles you can help us set a guideline to read.
lot's of votes: Absolutely worth the time reading
Fewer votes: Hmm might have some time
No votes: Sorry guy's

So by your baseline, if
So by your baseline, if something has no votes how will it ever get read? :) That is the problem right now, I have seen excellent articles that most don't understand but are valuable to some with 0 and 1 vote. On the other side, I've seen the 15th "how to package a shortcut" article with several votes. This should fix itself over time.... I hope.
After re-thinking the whole "0 pts for voting" thing, maybe that is a good thing so people don't go throwing votes around.
I still prefer the 0.5 for
I still prefer the 0.5 for reader feedback. They do have an option to vote for or against the post. Maybe add a neutral option. Like a "meh" button. I'm not sure if a user can vote on the same thread reply several times instead of just 1.
- points
I am getting confused with this as I have had 10 points deducted for a 1 - vote. Is this correct. I am also annoyed as the comments I made we perfectly valid!

Investigating
Hi Giroevolver, I'm investigating this issue.
Able to repro
Hello again Giroevolver, I've been able to reproduce the behavior you reported. Digging into the code now.
Problem solved
Thanks again Giroevolver for finding this problem and reporting it to us.
I'm happy to report that we've fixed the bug and have adjusted your rewards points balance to account for the deducted points.
@kevin
its great that symantec have user oriented and solution oriented people like Kevin.
actually this problem was not faced by him; but the prompt response given by kevin is appreciable.
Old Articles & Voting Question
What happens for old articles that were awarded under the "old" points system? If someone votes on those now do they get the new "bonus" points? I sometimes receive messages about old posts, such as the Pimp my console tech tips, if they vote on those now, do I get bonus points? I wouldn't think that is the case, but I'm curious.
----
Also is there a time limit on the votes? If I post an article today and a year from no someone finds it beneficial do I still get points from their vote even though the article is now old?
Thanks and keep up the great work!
Screenbert
Screenbert
Yes screenbert
You will get points on old articles for votes indeed.
And yes even for articles that are over 2 years old.
So that answers your question.

Too bad, not everyone will
Too bad, not everyone will read this link and apply it.
Has improved the standard and Quality
The new point system has improved the standard and Quality of the forum a lot.Now we do not see those one liners after every comment..( nice work..same here..me too..) just to add 5 points in their kitty.
Now what everybody is more concerned about is giving a resolution in one comment and they don't mind how much they have to type for it...
the quality of posts seen now is far more better than what was seen then.
Voting system is also played a major part in it as everybody know what they write should be good enough if not marked as solution should atleast get a vote and not negative.( no body likes that )
The new Idea column has also got a high attention from users "Innovation" that was missing earlier or was being un-heard. Until it became red hot thread nobody cared about it.

Points for Solutions
Hi Zahid,
I'm not sure I understand your question but after examining your posts I see that one is a solution to your own question.
Our system doesn't allow users to earn points by marking their own posts as solutions to questions.
I hope this explanation makes sense.
Thank you for contributing to Connect.
Kevin
did not hear about this
I completly forgot about this point
Pointing system
Pointing system is i think just fair. Keep on posting great ideas/tips and earn!
