Thank you very much. I am new to BE and I was willing to try BE 2010, but it wasn't working with MAC OSx 10.6.
Now I want to try R2. Can you advice how to get a trial?
Hi,
Free 60 day trailware for Backup Exec 2010 R2 can be downloaded from www.backupexec.com/trybe.
Thanks, Kate
@muhajreen, you can download trailware at www.backupexec.com. Please check that out!
Thanks Swathi...wondering if this will see deduplication backups running a lot faster than they currently do, and if VM backups rival the speed of something like Veeam.
I've stopped testing the dedupe option as a result of the backups running exactly the same time as a normal backup. And BE 2010 was literally 1/2 the speed of Veeam. If we don't have to go that route, that would be great, as it would mean using BE 2010 ONLY for backing up the Veeam data =/
If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such.
Some more information on the R2 release is available here
http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/358131
Note Symantec are currently planning to change the knoweldge base onto a new system - so the above URL is likely to change - although should still take you to a link to the new location once the changes are enabled.
Thanks Swathi, Now I am downloading Backup_Exec_2010_13.0.4164_MultiPlatforms_Multilingual_DVD.iso. But there is no mention that this is R2. I am affraid that I am downloading R1 now. Can you check if this release 4164 is R2?
Hi,
Thank you so much for your feedback. The Backup Exec 2010 trailware files have been updated with Backup Exec 2010 R2, therefore downloading Backup Exec 2010 will download the latest version which is Backup Exec 2010 R2. We will update the trailware pages to ensure this is clear.
Apologies for any confusion caused.
Thanks, Kate
Great ! I have just downloaded and installed Backup_Exec_2010_13.0.4164_MultiPlatforms_Multilingual_DVD.iso. And I found it's R2 !!
Now starting the trial. I hope I will be a BE 2010 R2 user soon.
Just for copmpleteness
Original 2010 = 13.0.2896
2010 R2 = 13.0.4164
Most locations where the original 2010 downloads were provided now provide the R2 download which can easiliy be confirmed by looking for 4164 in the download file name.
How does the new installation help with license management? I couldn't find anything in the linked FAQ document.
Hi Nicholas,
Backup Exec 2010 R2 now includes the new "Renewal Assistant" which allows Backup Exec to contact our licensing and maintenance system at Symantec to determine when you maintenance contracts are up for renewal. Once you complete the wizard for the Renewal Assistant you will be able to see maintenance contract information in help/about, you will see both licensing and maintenance information in the Backup Exec Licensing Assessment Tool (BELAT), as well as get maintenance renewal reminder (in the alerts section of the UI) at 90, 60, and 30 days before expiration. In these alerts you will also find a link that will take you to the Symantec Renewal Center where you will find your current partner/reseller of record and a partner/reseller locator.
We will be posting in the blog next week with a small "tour" of R2 highlighting these items.
As for true "license management" within the product, we are looking to add this in the future. Please take the time and post your request in the ideas forum so that your peers may chime in!

Are users with maintenance supposed to receive an Upgrade Notification ID for R2?
In short, No. To communicate this availability to existing customers, Live Update will be used.

Is it possible for NFR license owner (Symantec Donation Program) to upgrade to R2?
I do not see why not. Backup Exec 2010 R2 accepts Backup Exec 2010 license keys, so if your NFR is that you are good to go.

Thank you for your reply.
I got my BE 2010 NFR license from Peter Imming, so it's definitely a valid one. However, fileconnect.symantec.com says it's invalid. So I can't download R2 at the moment.
EDIT: Nevermind, I had to use the download link Peter initially gave me for the 2010 release, the link now leads to the R2 release.
Does this work with SMP yet? I checked for updates through the Symatec Installation Manager but it didn't turn anything up.
If you are referring to Backup Exec Infrastructure Manager (BEIM) we will providing this support in the near future.

I still can not get it to work. Get the "server not supported" error message.
In the LinuxUnixMac folder, I don't find any July 12th Mac file updates like the other Unix/Linux operating sysytems.
Am I looking in the wrong place. I did the same install procedure like I did with my 10.5 servers.
Did they forget to include the Mac updates in the download???
Mac OS X 10.6 is definitely supported and was tested in this release. If you are having issues with BE protecting this resource please contact technical support and open a ticket.

Your 10.6 support is a joke. I have tried installing the "10.6" client onto our 10.6.4 XServe and it shows that "Not Supported" I am on the phone with the engineering team, they have told me that ONLY 10.6 is supported, not .1, .2, .3, or .4. Does symantec actually expect people to not upgrade to the latest revision of OS X??? Bad Symantec...Veritas Backup Exec was an amazing product. But like anything else that Symantec has purchased and slapped their label on, they trash it.....
Hello,
Sorry to hear about the difficulty that you are experiencing. Were you trying to install to 10.6 using the Backup Exec 2010 "R2" edition? If not, this error will be seen.
Thanks,

Hey Swathi,
do you know if this new version works with MS SQL 2008 (builtin Windows SBS 2008 Premium) ???
I faced problems with BE2010, take a look a my previous post (https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/be2010-cannot-start-service-backup-exec-device-media-service-sbs-2008-premium). I´m Symantec partner and unhappy since Symantec cannot provide support for partners! I would like to start a P.O.C (Proof of Concept) to a new customer in a trial mode and it doens´t work!!! I wanna sell, but in that way it´s impossible!
Hi Renato,
I would ask that you call in to technical support to have our technicians diagnose the problem that you are seeing. It may be something as simple as enable named pipes on the SQL instance or something more. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope that we may help you see this through to resolution.
Thanks!

Don't see this mentioned anywhere. Could you please document here or in an appropriate FAQ whether all patches of 2010 have been rolled into 2010 R2? Such as Hotfixes 347535, 348284, 348315, 348518, 351870, 354451, 354911, 355922, 355938, 355131.
As a Symantec partner that has been struggling to maintain customers that have deployed BE2010 dedupe (unsucessfully) over the last few months, the update is welcomed, however I am dissappointed that this update is not the well needed service pack that we were all hoping for, but rather a new feature release.
How many more bugs are we likely to encounter this time I wonder?
{I echo the previous poster's request for a list of included fixes be made available without the need to download the full product.} - Sorry just found the article !!

Hi Andy/Steven,
All of the previous and upcoming (i.e. existing hotfixes and SP1) are rolled up in BE 2010 R2. For clarification, here are a list of the fixes as well as a link to the post from the support team:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/358131.htm
The following issues reported by our customers have been resolved in Backup Exec 2010 R2:

Thanks. I am unable to find ties between the Issue ID numbers above and the Hotfixes that had been documented previously. For example, Hotfix 355922 references ETrack 2016866 and 2073430, but neither of these are in the list you provided. So, I take it that the list of included fixes above is not comprehensive and your statement, "All of the previous and upcoming (i.e. existing hotfixes and SP1) are rolled up in BE 2010 R2" catches the hotfixes not explicitly listed.
So, all hotfixes that existed on the release date of 2010R2 are included. Got it.
Hi
Will there be a Small Business Edition of Backupexec 2010 R2, that allows the Backupexec software to be installed on the non-SBS Windows 2008 server that is running the hyper-visor on which sit the virtualised SBS server/s?
Microsoft give you an extra 2008 Server licence to run on the physical host server, so that the SBS servers can be fully virtualised, yet Symantec have made life very difficult by not allowing Backupexec SBE to be installed on this physical server. Not having this with previous versions of Backupexec SBE has made life pretty difficult for a lot of my customers.
Cheers
Simon
Hi Simon,
We have heard requests for this LOUD and CLEAR and now completely support this environment with BE 2010 R2. We did very specific engineering work in this release to support SBS when either partially or fully virtualized on Hyper-V. The only catch is that your SBS vm's need to be POWERED ON at time of installation so that when you install the Backup Exec 2010 R2 for Windows Small Business Server we can locate the SBS machines and verify that you are actually installing in an SBS environment.
Please try this out and let us know what you think!

Hi Simon,
Best bet is to download the BE 2010 R2 SCL and look through that.

When will ESX 4.1 be supported?
In this article: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/358281.htm it states;
"ESX 4.1 is not supported in the most current shipping product version of Backup Exec 2010 R2 at this time."
@rw, ESX 4.1 is already supported in the R2 version. Check out this blog for more details..https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/backup-exec-2010-r2-highlights.
Also, the technote will be updated soon with the right information. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Do you have to use BE2010 R2 to back up Exchange 2010 SP1, or can you still use R1?
K.
Hi Korbyn,
NO- R1 will NOT support Exchange 2010 SP1. Only R2 will support Exchange 2010 SP1.
Thanks!

Hi Billy,
Is BE2010 R1 partially not support Exchange 2010 SP1?
Any plan to release BE2010 service pack for supporting Exchange 2010 SP1?
Do you have the support documents on this?
Jack
@ Jack, as Billy indicated in his previous message, please note that R1 will NOT support Exchange 2010 SP1. Only R2 will support Exchange 2010 SP1.
Does BE 2010 R2 support oracle 11g R2?
@myliyifei, The BE2010 R2 SCL document does not indicate any support for Oracle 11g R2. But will check it out..please stay tuned.
@Swathi Turlapaty, thanks your answer. wait for your message
Confirmation is that Oracle 12g R2 is currently not supported. But the product team is actively working on providing support for it in the near future.
I downloaded the beta RALUS for the Netgear ReadyNAS Pro, but can't get BE 2010 to see it.
Any chance R2 will fix, or possibly 'break' this beta driver (it supposedly works with 2010, but I haven't dug into enough yet. I'd had to dl R2 and discover it ruins any chance of the beta ralus working).
Thank you...
