The Backup Exec 3600 appliance does come with deduplication which is included at no additional charge. The appliance is a backup server and storage all in one.  If you are interested in a demonstration we would be delighted to arrange one for you. You can request a demonstration here: http://www.symantec.com/business/products/trialware.jsp?pcid=pcat_storage&pvid=be_3600_1

I tried to talk with Symantec yesterday to get a question answered about the 3600, and a Symantec sales person said they didn't have any information and I needed to talk with a reseller.

What I want to know is if I can put a 6GB SAS HBA in the system and connet my Dell 124T for Disk to Disk to Tape.  The information I have found is not conclusive.

If it can, then I think there is great value.

Hi Signal,

Today, we do not allow the addition of any third party expansion cards. We are looking into offering storage expandability and tape-out options in the future though we cannot commit to if or when this will happen at this time. The Backup Exec 3600 Appliance offers unlimited use and deployment of the majority of our agents and options up to 5.5 TB of native disk space which yields around 40 TB of backup storage space in a typical corporate environment. As we move forward, we will make sure our sales teams and partners are aware of upcoming offerings related to the Backup Exec 3600. If you want to have a conversation or need further detail, I can be reached at michael_gallagher@symantec.com.

Kind regards,

Mike

I like the license by job size rather than by server agents.  Currently, we use Backup Exec to save data to tapes which are taken off site - since we still have a small enough data set.

When we out grow the tapes, or simply get fed up with messing with them, this may be a good next step.  I wonder if the appliance has any built in means of getting data off site.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the feedback. You can replicate the data over to a secondary appliance as a way of getting the data off-site. If you have any questions that we can help you with, please don't hesitate in reaching out.

Thanks, Kate

Do we know when this might be?

Hi,

The lack of being able to put to tape, makes it a deal breaker to us.

We are a sme and replication to another site is not really an option.  As we already have the tape infrastructure we would like to use it for offsite data.

So we might re-investigate once we could get an an appliance that will do d2d to tape.

Regards

What is the latest word on the tape support? I was speaking to my account rep from CDWG about this product and got the impression it is not cheap and the support isn't either. I like the concept of the product and that it is all in one package, but the cost may be a deal breaker and lack of tape support as well. If the pricing is as my rep said, then Symantec should be including training for the product free of charge.

Very excited about the unlimited aforementioned agents and having an all-in-one device.  We plan to build out our DR site by implementing one of these at our main office and the other at our DR site.  The Dedup option will be greatly helpful as well.

Are there any specs available for the SAS-enabled units yet?
