Auto-Update Inside a Layer
We have several applications in layers that have a built in "Auto-Update" feature like Adobe Acrobat Full version, for example.
We have found it better to turn off those features. Our users were updating Acrobat and causing the Layer to break. The update appears to have corrupted the layer.
We have found it best when building the layer to first build the VSA file, and then re-open the VSA globally and turn off the "auto update" or "search for update" features.
If users require the updates we, as admins, will build a new VSA for that version roll the patched version out again. It provides a better version control for us and the users.

Editor's Note:
- Adobe is an exception because of the unique way they perform an auto update. See this KB article for more info: Adobe Reader update will not complete when in a layer.
- With most apps you should be able to auto update just fine and have the changes go into the writable sublayer. For more detail, read: Updating SVS Virtual Software Packages.
