We promised to keep you updated on the progress of Backup Exec 2014. Today, I am excited to confirm that Backup Exec 2014 will reach general availability (GA) on 2 June 2014!

As indicated in my last update, we closed the Beta program a little over a week ago. I wanted to share some additional customer feedback we received since that time:

  • “Love the redesign on the UI- specifically the Job Monitor.”
  • “Happy that I have so much flexibility to see what is happening, without having to navigate between screens.”
  • “Very pleased with it. Very smooth installation and it works very good.”

Thank you for your continued support.

This means we can download it on the 2nd of June, 2014 and it will work 100% with Windows 2012 Standard R12? Full compatibility with LTO2 tapes (PowerVault 124T, old school, I know).

Is it supported to install the media server on windows server 2003 r2? also can you do a direct upgrade from BE 2010?

1 - Yes, it can b e installed on 2003.

2 - Yes, Customers using Backup Exec 2012, 2010 or 12.5 can simply install version 2014 over their existing versions of Backup Exec.  Backup Exec will automatically migrate existing Backup Exec related data from versions 12.5 and higher to version 2014

In a previous post, you said:

"We are still working through the exact eligibility requirements for customers no longer current on maintenance and will provide an update ahead of general availability (GA)."

Can we get an update on this please: What options do we have for clients with Backup Exec 2012 licensing, but not on active maintence?

My understanding is that the customer would just need to purchase a version upgrade license as before to reinstate their maintenance on their existing licenses.

Does anyone know if they had readded the tape support back in from 2010, where you can backup multiple servers/location to tape with a single job without overwriting your previous backups or have to manually set the times for each server that goes on to the same tape.

Have backup speeds improved?

Can we backup all servers on the same job again? Might be the same question Jack4dh asked.

@norbertg,

There have been performance enhancements in product but performance would vary depending on backup environement.

Yes. We can backup all remote servers in a single backup job in Backup Exec 2014. Job monitor and multi-server backup jobs functionality has been added.

@timvan007,

Yes. BE 2014 would support GRT file level backups or Windows 2012 deduplication volumes.

Adding a comment to this - for the GRT of Dedup held inside Hyper-V VMs, the media server operating system version will make a difference as to what is supported (you will need Windows 2012 or Windows 2012 R2 and NOT Windows 2008)

Hello..

Glad to hear a new version is becoming available to support Windows Server 2012 as a Media Server, but I want to confirm since i only see mentioned Windows Server 2012 "R2". We don't have R2, only the original Windows Server 2012, Will BE 2014 Support it as a media as well?

Thanks

Is there any documentation available where we can get a heads up on what to expect after upgrading?

Also, on my view of this blog page there is a Recent Blog Posts entry from Brian Greene announcing that Backup Exec 2014 is now available! Is that just a practice run ? :)

Thx

Hello DaveyMG,

There have been enhancements to improve product performance and functionality. Official documentation for BE 2014 would be available once the product is GA.

The blog which Brian Greene announced earlier was regarding BE 2014 Beta release.

I'm really, really hoping that 2014 is going to clean up the product's performance and reliability. Right now I have three backup jobs on 2012 that have been sitting in Queued, Operation:none state for three hours, a repeat of a problem that's occurred before.

Given that the GA date for 2014 is so close I'm putting the Arcserve quotes to one side until I've given the new version a chance to prove itself.

Hello Flo-Hilse,

SDR is supported for Windows 2012. Windows 2012 R2 is not supported.

Thats sound not like fully support for Windows 2012 R2, at what time it will be fully supported?

Another Question: When i install the RTM of BE2014, can i upgrade it to release version or is there no difference?

Backup/restore for Windows 2012 R2 is fully supported except the SDR feature.

BE2014 RTM can be upgraded to release version.

shoud I install 2012 backup exec and put old database of server and update to 2014 backup exec, or can I wait and in a week could I install new 2014 backup exec ant put 2012 backup exec database?

Like all versions of Backup Exec if you are bringing a database over from a decommisioned server you have to do this at the start as there is no ability to merge databases once you have two databases that have both been running jobs

Does this have a Mac Agent that supports all the way to OSX 10.9 Mavericks?

We have 3 Mac file servers that we do terabytes of data backup and we have been stuck on OSX 10.7 Lion because that is the farthest that Backup Exec 2012 with SP4 supports.  OSX Lion is 3 years old this summer.

For those of us wanting to upgrade asap, who haven't had access to the Beta...is there any information we can use to view the software in action?

Also, is there any information we can read ahead of time to help us plan for the upgrade?  I understand that I can upgrade my existing installation, but my preference may be to do a clean installation.  It sounds like the GUI, or at least the methodology has changed significantly.

Glad to hear this announcement, I know many are eager to upgrade and be able to backup 2012 R2 centrally, as well as protecting some of the scenarios that were missing in BE 2012.

This is welcomed news, thanks for working hard to get this released for your customers.

Could you please post some information we can use to get a leg up on the new interface and features?  A video of 2014 in use would really be great....before its released.  As you can imagine, once its available for download, we'll be busy installing and attempting to configure it.  smiley

Looking forward to the release!

Hi JarodC,

Have you used BE 2012? The difference is not much. The job monitor has been added.

My major concern has always been GRT backup and restore for Exchange 2013.

There are other items included. Just check out the read me document.

Thanks Nene, I imagined the ability to create one job to backup all the servers would create a fairly significant change to the way things are presented in the GUI.

I'll try to find the read me...

The multi-servers job setting does change teh bahviour in the job creation dialogs.

As a couple of examples

1) If you multi-select servers before you create a job, then the job creation dialogs will prompt for if you want a multi-server job or single server jobs (and give you an option to set the choice as default)

2) if you bring up the properties of an existing job and then edit the selections in the job. There are Plus, Minus and Order buttons to allow you to add, remove or re-order server resoruces within a single job

There are other changes to do with multi-server but they tend to mostly be in dialog/property boxes and not obvious change to the look and feel of the initial screens.

FYI The lower pane of the virtual host server in the Backup and Restore Section will show details of mutliple virtual machines giving some useful capabilities, although this is not part of multi-server as such.

Hi Brian,

I'm so happy the date has been finally confirmed.

I already started using the BE 2014 RTM and hope to update it when the GA is finally available next week.

The only issue I have is that the SDR is not supported for Server 2012 R2.

I hope that will be resolved in the GA.

Thanx for the update.smiley

Will an admin guide or release notes be available before the GA date?

Also, has the deduplication performance increased or changed at all with this version?

I have attempted to use deduplication with BE 2012 SP1-4, and the performance is terrible to the point that I had to disable it and revert back to normal disk storage with software compression. And yes, this is after many hours of performance tuning which definitively determined it to be the BE software, not OS or hardware (agreed upon by symantec techs on tickets and forums alike).

My personal experience with Dedupe has been pretty amazing as far as performance goes.

Right now, I'm running a backup of a WS2008R2 VM, running SQL 2005 and its clocking in at 4,815 MB/min ....330GB over 1h 15 min - to Dedupe, being pulled over 1GB copper.   Its by not a new dedupe store either.  There's been tons of maintenance tasks run on this already...

C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec>crcontrol --dsstat

************ Data Store statistics ************
Data storage      Raw    Size   Used   Avail  Use%
                          10.9T  10.2T   6.1T   4.2T  59%

So I'm using 6.1TB of dedupe storage, with a 10.9:1 "Compression Ratio"...or 66.49TB of hydrated backup data with about 40% storage capacity left over.

Thank you for providing some insight into BE2014.

We have struggled with Dedupe performance. We upgraded from BE 2010sp2 to 2012sp1-3. Will we see a Dedupe performance increase if we upgrade to 2014 or would you advise that we rebuild?

We started with 5 x 2TB 7.2k SAS DAS raid 5, but currently use 10GB iSCSI connected NAS with 10 x 3TB disks raid 10. Will iSCSI attached Dedupe be supported in BE2014? The QNAP TS-EC1679U-RP is listed on the BE2012 HCL.

Question for JarodC - what HW are you using for Dedupe?

our stats - best achieved Job rate 1,413.67 MB/Min

There is no difference between trialware version and Fileconnect version.
On Fileconnect, you will need to enter in your BE2014 serial number, which I don't believe you have yet as our customer care department begins processing them today.
But to answer your question, fileconnect of BE2014 is not updated yet, that is in process this morning.

We have BE2012 sp3 on HP Dl180g6, Server 2008R2 with 32GB Ram.

Dedupe is provided by 10GB iSCSI connected QNAP NAS with 10 x 3TB disks raid 10 but performance is not good.

The QNAP TS-EC1679U-RP is listed on the BE2014 HCL as BEDupe target

The Dedupe folder was upgraded from BE2010 sp3 to BE2012

Will we see dedupe performance increase with another in place upgrade from BE2012 to BE2014 ?

or should we rebuild the media server with Server 2012 and create a new dedupe folder?

I'm already thinking, upgrade and see...

The BE 3600 R3 (BE 2014) upgrade will be released as an ISO.  The BE 3600 R3 Appliance upgrade ISO includes more than the upgrade to BE 2014.  In this release we are introducing several new features including NIC teaming, improvements to the Appliance UI, Security, more extensive HW monitoring, and improvements to AutoSupport.  The ISO is created and extensively tested before we can release to our customers.  Testing not only includes making sure the ISO works, but also includes testing deliverability across our customer base.  Much of this process cannot begin before the final GA build of Backup Exec is available which allows us to initiate the final ISO build.  We are working on creative ways to shorten this timeframe for future releases.

You've already confirmed that BE 2014 will work as a media Server on Windows Server 2012 as well as R2.. thank you

As a work around to use BE 2012 SP4 on our Windows Server 2012, i had installed a Hyper V -Windows Server 2008 R2 Server on it and installed the BE 2012 on that Server as the media server and backed up the Windows Server 2012 from there, but now that BE 2014 is available, I want BE 2014 right on the Windows 2012 server as I'm getting a major transfer rate degrade backing up to USB from within the Hyper V and backups are just too slow.

I was in the process of installing BE 2014 on our Windows Server 2012 Server, when it prompted for licensing, I attempted to enter my current license (2012) plus maintenance keys, it will not accept our Server license, only the maintenance keys and wants to continue with Trial.  Will I need to first install BE 2012 on the Windows Server 2012, ignoring errors and then install BE2014 on top or is there another way I should be doing this installation to use my current license keys?

Note: we are still within our maintenance time frame, and understood we are entitled to the upgrade as part of it.

Thanks

Please note that you will need a new license file in order to work with BE2014.  Since you are under maintenance, you will get your updated license file from our customer care department soon.  They have started processing those.

For the time being you can install the product without a license key, which will give you a 60 day evaluation mode until you get your license file.

Why not allow appliances to upgrade to 2014 with GA, and do the other appliance upgrades at the next Service Pack. Tellin me it is an ISO has me wondering what kind of upgrade it is going to be, sorta of seems odd to make it an ISO just to upgrade. Upgrading through a disc is going to be fun, not... "Gee, I hope this update goes well because if not I wont be able to access the appliance, because it is protected, and then I will have to open up a ticket, which has a super fast response time..."

Are you hearing something else more often than "We want to backup 2012R2" from your customers?

Found this gem on your website:

Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Support

Backup Exec 2014 supports Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. You can back up and recover Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2, at any level, whenever and however you need to.

However you need to, oh besides SDR.......

Might want to have you text team put an asterick and a disclaimer next to that one, you can find the page here:

http://www.symantec.com/page.jsp?id=introducing-backup-exec-2014

Also add a large disclaimer on all 2014 release related content that states NOT AVAILABLE FOR APPLIANCES that way it doesnt take me 2+ days of research to come across a blog before I find out I still can't backup 2012R2 even though I have a SYMANTEC appliance.

Hi,

I am looking for a Backup solution for our environment. It has 2 hosts running Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 on 10.0.99.x network with 10 VM's each.VM's have applications like

1) Active Directory

2) Sharepoint 3)SAP

VM's run on 10.0.99.x and 10.0.90.x.

We also need to take backup of one physical file server which is running windows server 2008 R2.

Question : Would we be able to install windows agent on Windows 2012 R2 Core edition, so that  we can install on the hyper-v host and take backup of the .VHDX files which are stored on the host machines ?

which one best suits us .. Backup Exec 2014 software or backup exec applicance ?

Please suggest.

Thanks in advance
