Mar. 10, 2014: ***Stage 2 of the Backup Exec 2014 Beta is now live for those who previously registered. You should have received an email with download instructions. If you previously registered for the Beta, but did not receive download instructions via email, please send an email to bebeta@symantec.com. As a friendly reminder, the Beta program is closed to new registrations. We thank you for your continued support. ***

Feb.28, 2014: ***Please note: Registration for the Backup Exec 2014 Beta is now closed, as the maximum number of applicants has been reached.  We are grateful for the overwhelming response and appreciate your support.***

We are excited to share some important news with you today. Based on feedback from customers and partners during our Tech Demos at the end of last year, the next release of Backup Exec (formerly referenced as Backup Exec 2012 R2), will be named Backup Exec 2014*. We will be rolling out the Beta in two stages:

-  Stage one is planned to start next week with a select group of customers.

-  Stage two will likely start the first or second week of March and will be available for all users who have been approved for the Beta program.

This Beta is an important milestone and we wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience. Our top priority is to release a high quality version of Backup Exec. This means we will not compromise on quality to ship a product before it’s ready. While it has taken us a bit longer to reach this milestone, it enables us to provide you with a higher quality product.

***Please note, as stated above: As of February 28, 2014, registration for the Beta is now closed, as the maximum number of applicants has been reached.***

Finally, if you haven’t signed up the Beta program, there is still time. This is your chance to try out and test the upcoming Backup Exec release before it’s generally available to the market later this year. This version of the Backup Exec Beta program is very unique. Most vendors, Symantec included, typically support Beta programs in test environments only. This year, we decided to do things a little differently. We will support you running the Beta in test or production environments right up until GA date.

Here’s a quick recap of why you should sign up to the Beta program today:

·         Get support for Windows 2012 and 2012 R2

·         Get granular recovery capabilities for Exchange 2013 and SharePoint 2013

·         Gain access to a dedicated Beta feedback team who are standing by to assist you throughout the Beta

           program

·         Upgrade to newer builds throughout the Beta program

·         Upgrade from Beta code to Gold code without having to uninstall/reinstall

·         Leverage the job monitor multi-server jobs functionality that’s back!

We look forward to receiving your valuable feedback on the Beta and helping us attain our goal of a high quality release.

---

*We are still working through the exact eligibility requirements for customers no longer current on maintenance and will provide an update ahead of general availability (GA).

Moving into the right direction. Hope the 2nd stage will be as broadly available as possible - or maybe even an open beta, but only with support to approved users...

This is great news Brian!

We are currently setting up our Partner Hosted Backup Exec cloud, in which we gather duplicated copies of on-premise backups from our customers and recreate VM's in our cloud infrastructure based on their backups. this way we not only offer a solidDRaaS solution but also Business Continuity.

I will certainly register for the Beta and install the software on our cloud infrastructure and possibly one or two test customers. hope all goes well as with the 2012 & 2012 SP2 release.

Back on track...

Ben

Congrats on reaching public beta stage!

I moved on to another product long ago so I can only wish you luck in the future and hope you will manage to pick up speed so that you can implement support for an operating system while it's still being rolled out.

The reference to "gold code" means the released product.

Will this version allow you to install the backup server management software on a 2012 server (not talking about agent support just to be clear)?

Yes!  Backup Exec 2014 will allow you to install the Backup Exec Server on a Windows 2012 OS and a Windows 2012 R2 OS.  This will be both, "media server" and agent - we will support both.

I know that with the release we are adding support for the following:
The Agent for Linux now supports the following:
RHEL 5.8, 5.9, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4
SLES 11 SP2 and OES 11
Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10

I will inquire with teh team about SP3 for SLES11.  Other specific linux distro's you are interested in, if you can let me know which ones, I can investigate and get back to you.

Hi Brian, are there any white papers or documentation on the new system. Please share to mentally prepare with the new screens & features.

...I guess you need to join the Beta to see what's going on. This would be the easiest way to see what changes have been made.

Thanks!

I've been sitting on $5k worth of Backup Exec 2012 license.  Worthless because it wouldn't install on my 2012 server.  Will I be getting a free upgrade when the Gold rolls out?  If not, can you imagine where Symantec can go. :)

If you are on active maintenance, yes you get Backup Exec 2014 license (free upgrade).  As the blog indicated "We are still working through the exact eligibility requirements for customers no longer current on maintenance and will provide an update ahead of general availability (GA)."

I have a current license(s) and I am in the same boat as the gentleman above. What do I have to do to get the beta 2014 and drivers for an LTO6 tape drive?

BTW...I have been a member of the beta program for a couple of years and this is the first I have heard of "2014" - not a single notice!

Sign up to the beta to get yourself registered and through the approval process.

You have been part of the beta program for Backup Exec? You can private message me your email address and I can check your status.  We have been pretty vocal, lots of blogs posted, about this BETA and the name change - which was just announced last week.  The BETA registration for this release was opened in October 2013, we opened it up early with a lot of communication about it.

Hi Brian,

We have  installed Backup Exec 2012 as part of a Netapp Installation for about a month now (previously using HP Data Protector with HP EVA sans)

Obviously did not know about the beta as just signed up but I have read that end of second quarter/early third quarter is target date for general release. Is this still the case as I am seriously considering ditching and going back to DP due to the numerous issues with this version.

Apart for the lack of support for 2012 R2 one of my main issues is the server centric architecture - will the new version address this issue?
