Explosive information growth is not new news for organizations anymore – it is becoming the norm. The incredible strain this growth puts on infrastructures designed to manage and protect it has been a growing concern for years, though much more accelerated in recent times as virtualization and eDiscovery requirements have pushed this strain to a whole new level.

Symantec is the leader in backup and recovery. As the leader, we focus on addressing the biggest of challenges IT managers face with infrastructures spanning both physical and virtual worlds.

With shrinking IT budgets and growing digital assets, the focus for organizations is naturally on cutting costs without compromising service level agreements. Dealing with multiple point products tends to increase cost and create complexity. Customers of all sizes – from small businesses to large enterprises – need a better backup solution. A backup solution that addresses challenges holistically. A solution that brings down cost and complexity.

With this vision and commitment in mind, Symantec was first to deliver “dedupe everywhere” – or deduplication capabilities from source to target, from data center to remote offices, and across physical and virtual machines. Symantec turnkey appliances eliminate integration complexity and drive down operational expenses. Symantec V-Ray technologies provide unmatched visibility into both physical and virtual machines.

So what are we up to next? In 2012, Symantec is delivering Better Backup For All. Symantec will break the backup window with up to 100 times faster backup, deliver integrated management for backup and snapshots, and provide new tools to help manage the challenges associated with eDiscovery including the elimination of the infinite retention mindset. These innovations combined, are geared up to significantly reduce the cost of doing backups across your physical and virtual environments. This marks the beginning of a new goal to drive out up to 80% of the operational expenses of doing backup and recovery over the next 5 years!

In addition, we’re taking you into advanced virtual machine backups, self-service recovery, and cloud-based protection.

"...Symantec will break the backup window with up to 100 times faster backup..."

How you can do it. Which technology is used. How it`s work and why  it not used before ? )

I`m sorry for my bad eanglish.

If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such. Thx

Breaking the backup window refers to the new NetBackup Accelerator functionality.  It can be used on any OS platform NetBackup supports with the NetBackup 7.5 client code.  We can combine up to three different technologies to cut time out of your required backup window.

Accelerator itself is kind of like synthetics version 3.0.  There's more to it than that, but more than I wish to explain in a quick response to your question.  Contact your sales team to have a more in depth discussion if you wish.

Accelerator can leverage the use of change logs (ex: Windows Change Journal) to remove the file system scan from the beginning of the backup and avoid that overhead.  We can also take advantage of source deduplication for further optimization.  Finally, once the data has been sent to the server, we compile it all on the fly (read: in-line) to generate a full backup out of just the unique data.

In the end, NetBackup Accelerator can give you the most optimized way to get the data protected.  I've seen a lot of tests from customers, and their feedback is overwhelmingly positive.  It's very common for me to see anywhere from 20 to 60 times faster backups.  I've also seen many examples of hundreds of times faster.  Ultimately, how much faster has a lot to do with how much data changes and if you're able to take advantage of the complementary technologies I mentioned before.

One of the first realistic tests we did internally was of a 60 gb data set being backed up from Asia to North America. It was typically a ~4.5 hour backup.  Once we enabled NetBackup Accelerator the backup took ~1.5 minutes.  That's ~180 times faster.  That sort of convinced us we were on to something. :)

Looks like that site is nothing but videos and social media links.

Great if you are "into" that - but my version of Firefox doesn't show the videos, so some adblocking is going on....

And there is no text or content, so the site itself is pretty meaningless

Way to go Symantec!

Bummed you're not able to see the videos...that's actually the cool think about the site--that you can see industry experts talk about many of the new technologies in NetBackup and Backup Exec.  If you click on any of the videos around the center spot, there are text explanations of the technology and the advantages of each feature on the right side of the screen.  In the "Learn More" section you can access the corresponding blog post for each feature as well.  Hope this helps!

Alternatively, send me a note on which feature you're most interested in learning about and I'll send you direct links to them.

Have a great day.
