By Cecily Joseph, Symantec's Director of Corporate Responsibility
Our CEO Enrique Salem has endorsed the Women’s Empowerment Principles, recently launched by the United Nations Global Compact and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). These principles are meant to guide companies like Symantec on the ways they can advance and empower women in the workplace.
The reason our CEO endorsed these principles and Symantec supports this initiative is because we realize that equal treatment of men and women in the workplace is good for business. We know it is important to hire and promote women in the workplace - to make gender equality a real part of our business - yet we struggle with how to do this effectively. We constantly ask ourselves how we can move this from an aspirational ideal to something where we can truly move the needle.
The number of women in the technology space are shrinking. We want to not only hire the best and brightest from a shrinking pool, but also help them be successful at Symantec. We feel the Women’s Empowerment Principles provide a roadmap on how to successfully build gender equality into our business.
The challenge is to turn good ideas into action and to create real goals that we can measure. If we are successful in integrating the principles into our business, it will help us be a better company - a more competitive company. That’s a win for everyone.
