Today we announced the latest version of Symantec Data Insight.
Since Symantec acquired Veritas Software in 2004, we’ve had one clear and focused goal – to help our customers manage and protect their information. This is what keeps us up at night.
The creation of Data Insight was a natural innovation and outgrowth of the acquisition. It demonstrates innovation and integration across Symantec’s security and storage portfolio. For those of you not familiar with Data Insight, the solution improves information governance by providing intelligence into ownership and usage of unstructured data – including files such as documents, presentations, spreadsheets and emails.
In order to manage and protect data, organizations need to know what the data is, who owns it and how it is being used. This is relatively easy for databases used by accounting, the CRM tools used by sales, or the libraries used by marketing, but it becomes unmanageable for the millions of files classified as unstructured data.
Data Insight’s intelligence into ownership and usage patterns helps organizations increase accountability for efficient storage consumption and helps provide the tools necessary to implement effective data lifecycle management. It also helps protect unstructured data against loss and misuse. The technology should be central to an organization’s unstructured data management effort and information governance strategy.
With Data Insight, storage professionals, security professionals and business leads in the organization can better understand who owns the data, how it is being used and what data is relevant, enabling effective management of data growth to reduce cost and protect sensitive data, regardless of where it is stored.
We find, across many deployments, that Data Insight is tracking hundreds of TBs of data with millions of files/folders and billions of access events generated by high workloads. Data Insight’s architecture leverages our deep file system expertise and can scale-out to effectively meet the challenges of managing large and rapidly growing data sets.
For those of you familiar with Data Insight, you’ll notice that we are no longer referring to separate Data Insight products – in fact, we’ve changed from referring to “Data Insight For Storage” and for “Data Loss Prevention Data Insight” to simply referring to “Data Insight.”
We believe this moniker change more accurately reflects the reality that organizations must treat storage management, backup and recovery and security as one comprehensive information governance strategy – including the management and protection of the information. The integration of Data Insight across our portfolio of products such as Data Loss Prevention and Storage Foundation is proof point of this strategy.
Enhancements to Symantec Data Insight help organizations transform large-scale storage operations and simplify information governance processes to reduce costs, reduce risk and achieve compliance across a comprehensive set of data sources.
