Customers Gain Simplicity & Efficiency with NetApp Snapshot Copy and Replication Management with NetBackup Replication Director
By Glenn Miller, Senior Poduct Manager at NetApp
Do you love the service levels and efficiency that can be delivered using NetApp snapshots, SnapVault and SnapMirror replication for Integrated Data Protection? Wouldn't it be great if you could combine these capabilities with an Enterprise data management solution like Symantec NetBackup?
Welcome to NetBackup Replication Director which is introduced with the NetBackup 7.5 release. Replication Director integrates array based snapshots and replication into NetBackup Storage Lifecycle Policies (SLPs) for the first time. This means that NetBackup will enable customers to take full advantage of NetApp Snapshots, SnapVault and SnapMirror replication technologies. Moreover, Replication Director indexes and includes snapshot based data in the NetBackup catalog to enable a unified restore process for snapshots, D2D backup copies and tape.
First, let's talk about what makes NetApp Snapshot technology so unique. Not all snapshots are created equal. NetApp wrote the book on Snapshot technology over 15 years ago, and still provides the most space-efficient snapshots in the industry. NetApp Snapshot copies are also low impact, so you can make backups more often to provide more recovery points resulting in lower RPOs. Most importantly data can be recovered from NetApp snapshot copies almost instantaneously.
The story does not end at NetApp Snapshot copies. NetApp also provides an industry unique array based backup solution in SnapVault. SnapVault has zero impact on production server since backups do not go through the host systems. Instead, the data is moved directly between NetApp arrays with very efficient block level replication. SnapVault replication is efficient because it supports an incremental forever backup model, but it also provides fast restores since the data is always stored as a "full backup." This allows customers to have a multi-tiered backup solution where they retain local NetApp Snapshots for days or weeks and retain SnapVault snapshots for months or years. SnapVault is a very cost effective solution as it takes advantage of NetApp storage technologies around snapshots, deduplication and compression. With NetBackup 7.5 Replication Director manages the backup and recovery of data from SnapVault systems.
Replication Directors provides tight integration with NetApp technologies. For example, Replication Director integrates with NetApp storage service APIs to automate secondary storage provisioning and replication configuration. This greatly simplifies the deployment of array based replication for both backup and primary storage disaster recovery. Yes. SnapMirror replication can be included in a NetBackup SLP to manage replication of data to a DR site. Customers can use the data for site fail-over and can offload the primary system for tape backup or enable test/dev workflows with FlexClones.
I hope this gives an idea of why customers are so excited about the integration between NetApp Snapshots and replication and Symantec NetBackup with Replication Director. The combination provides an optimal solution with industry leading NetApp storage systems and enterprise data management. This combination allows customers to reduce operating costs through simplified management and improve customer satisfaction by providing higher server levels.
