Deleted Comments: To be or not to be...
Symantec Connect is a pro-active and solutions oriented website. This is one forum that different IT professionals are sharing valuable knowledge voluntarily thus solved threads are treated like holy grails as per one of our administrators. Many a times we see the solutions by browsing the different topics available that is why the leadership is discouraging comments that are non-technical or not helpful to other readers. But what is helpful or informative and what is not? That is a question that I usually ask myself when contributing to this site. Does an affirmative comment praising a fellow community member on a specific comment not helpful? Well, some of our replies had been deleted due to that.
What if we are urge to comment due to a solution that helped us or moved us? what then shall we do? I was told that the thumbs up option would be used for this respond and you can do that once per issue or discussed blog. Our forum's admins has a lot of forums to read and decides which to delete and which to retain, so we could help them by filtering the comments that we give. Some questions asked might be, Will this help other community members in searching for a resolution? or would it make their search complicated due to a long thread of random verbatim. Well as for me, if they delete a reply I made because I was moved by a fellow members suggestion, then so be it. At least my comment might encourage the fellow member to further help others. It is not only due to prizes or nice titles that others help. They are moved through the constant appreciation that everyone gives them.
In closing, it is always the right of the admin to check which must be filtered out. I would just like to add that some might just be copying a reply up the thread but others might be genuine replies of appreciations. So to our admins, Deleted Comments: To be or not to be...
Just my thoughts.
The inside Symantec community blog is the place to post general news about Symantec that doesn't belong in any of the community specific blogs (such as Backup & Archiving or Security).

Just one more comment for this...
If you view your points, you will see the date when it was deleted.. but you could not contest because you do not know the contents anymore... like my comment.. will it be deleted by the admin again?
What about keeping the comment but stripping of the point if you want to..
thus a praise to a fellow member would not be wasted... put less points to it... but please, if it is not offensive... please do not delete it..
just my thoughts.
Thanks.

This is absolutely true Nel,
i quite agree with you, sometimes in the middle of some discussions there are lots of such threads which do not need elaborate technical details, or details that would help others, but it is a related comment of the other threads, these are also deleted, i think points should be lesser than deleting the whole thread.

Hi folks, Thank you for the
Hi folks,
Thank you for the comments and considerations. The admins make a concerted effort to read through as many threads as possible. There are times when a small handful of users are "gaming for points," whereby the admins do delete comments. What I mean by that is simply a user will post a reply, then another, then another, and another - in consecutive order. In reality, the user could have simply "edited" their original post with the additional information. I believe the roll out of our new points system will help those users, who were posting to simply gain points, realize the voting option will help other users define the usefulness of posts.
We certainly want everyone to collaborate and feel like their information is welcome. We feel we have one of the best communities around in the enterprise software space, and it's because of technical folks like you who are willing to help each other.
As admins, we're trying to make this community the best it can, and that includes collaboration by everyone. Feel free to comment on threads, but as you would imagine, we are always looking to help solve a users issue.
Best,
Eric
