Difference between Vmware ESX and ESXi

Often I get the question what the difference is between Vmware ESX and VMware ESXi.
The biggest difference off course is the price. Where VMware ESXi is free to download and use, VMware ESX cost a lot of money.
On the internet I found a site that explains the differences more then only the price.

this mught be a silly question but for testing purpose i want to know can esxi can be installed on normal desktop PC. we have installed win 2008 but i doubt for ESSXi
