Does SVS support putting AV products in a layer?
Q:
John wrote, "The application we probably uninstall and reinstall the most is our AV product (Symantec). Does SVS support putting AV products in a layer or is that something that hasn't been certified yet?"
"I think the last time we asked about that it was something being considered. We would also want to make sure that Symantec approves putting their product in a layer and certifies that we won't lose any functionality and thus protection. So, can you give me an update on current status in this area please. Thanks."
A:
With SVS 2.0, we do not support drivers in layers. All AV products use a driver. So no, it's not supported now for that reason.
Regardless, even when we do support drivers in Lightning, best practice will still likely be to put AV scanners in the base and ensure they are on the ignore list (all of the Symantec engines are on the default ignore list) so that they get a "neutral" and complete view of the system. You don't want a virus scanner being subject to SVS conflict elimination – that means things could be hidden from the virus scanner. You want it in the base and ignored, so it scans everything normally as if SVS wasn't even there.
AV Layers
I have built a number of AV layers successfully (including Symantec) even though they're not supported.
The only one I have not been successful with at this time is NOD32 from ESET. Which is one of the ones I would like to have as a layer over the other because it's extremely lightweight in comparison and I think it's one of the best solutions out there.
Looking forward to the driver support not only AV but also numerous Burning Software packages and Utilities.

Regarding AV in the layers,
Regarding AV in the layers, did you install the AVG antivirus?
I use this antivirus for the easy installation, free updates and also for the cost, completly free.
Thanks
AV in Layers
Any plans for SVS to support AV scanners (or maybe even spyware scanners) sometime in the future (maybe in Vista?)?
Before "in layer" "in Vista" would be great
Hey, I'm still trying to install & use my AV (McAfee Enterprise) under Vista... so as soon as it will be safe & stable - I'll then try to virtualize it. Any Xperience with McAfee?
Creating an image of the drive from a layer
I hope this is not too much off topic.
I understand the reason to install AV and firewall software in the base.
But how would you install a Disc Image Software? On a layer or in the base?
The reason I ask is that when it is installed in a layer it will take itself into the backup as a normal installed program, right? And it will capture itself in the repro of the SVS.
But when the time comes to restore the PC from the image the image software will be copied back as both.
Is there a way around this? I would really love to install the disc image software into a layer and have it restored later on a layer and not in the base.
