From "Man of La Mancha" lyrics by Joe Darion

To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go.

Have you ever had a dream to improve the Netbackup product? What are some suggestions for what you would like to see in NetBackup 7.x? Has there been something you wanted to see done with the software for many years but were afraid to sound it out because you know in your heart that you are simply dreaming an impossible dream?

Here are a some suggestions to get this blog started:

1) a link on the policy "attributes" page to bring up a text window to put additional information concerning the policy.

2) the ability to temporarily disable a single client in the client list

3) a list of policy_type numbers when you are using bplist so you don't have to bring up the bplist man page

feature feedback

We are hoping to add a capability to this portal to allow everyone to forward us their ideas for our products and allow everyone to vote on them. I'm not sure if that will appear in the 1.1 release of Connect, but we'll have it soonish.

Those are really good ideas you listed. I'll make sure they get into our internal product suggestion system. FWIW, item #2 is under strong consideration for our next major release.

Here is what I'd love to see

Here is what I'd love to see on Unix platforms:

- ability to remotely manage (read and write) exclude_list.* and include_list.* files, either from Java GUI or command line.

- Or, even better yet IMHO, to consolidate the backup exclusion/inclusion list files into the bp.conf configuration file.  That leaves only one NetBackup configuration file on the clients to manage.

Partially there

Centralized management of include/exclude lists isn't completely there yet, although we know it is important.

You can manage them for both unix and windows with the command line, see this blog post http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/setting-and-getting-excludeinclude-lists-without-bpgp

I believe that fix went into 6.5.3 and I'm pretty sure there is an EEB for at least one other earlier version of 6.5 if you call support.

It's not the complete centralized, UI approach, but it's a start.

priority

I would like to be able to do a one-time  increase of the priority of a queued job. Just that one job for one run.

we do this

This became available in 6.5.2 in NOM, Java Console and Windows Console. I can post a screen shot if you haven't seen it. It's pretty neat.

Backup, Archive, and Restore

I wish there was a stop or cancel button on the interface. Too many times the parameters need to be changed before the searching of the catalog for images begin. I juist now accidently hit the refresh button with the dates preset from today back to the year 2004.waiting..........................

Many times I have abondoned the search and brought up a new BAR to do the restore.

STANDARD POLICY

Why not be able to combine the MS-Windows-NT into the Standard policy type. It seems to me that the clients in the policy are already defined as to whether they are a PC or UNIX type of client. That could be used to determine the backup needs for either PC or UNIX.

Global Exclusion list

Hi Tim,

A user posted this question for global exclusion configuration, which is available on EMC NetWorker/Legato.  I think Symantec really should consider this feature for NetBackup:

Thanks.

Thanks for the note

BTW, we're working on an Ideas portal to better capture these great ideas.

Can you email me your company contact info so I can add your suggestion to our system?

Restoration size / Progress

Hi,

I was looking for an option in Netbackup where in we could pre calculate the restoration size before it is really triggered. I am not sure if there is a way to already do this.

I agree we can see the size for a single file but when it comes to folder there is the issue.

Also another thing I noted is that when a restore it triggered the byte count starts to move as soon as the tape is being read and hence gives us a false image to estimate the restoration time/size. Is there a way to make it show only the exact size of data it has restored instead of showing the bytes it has read.

Thanks

Retore from specified image copy #

Hello,

It would be nice, to be able to specify which image copy is used for a restoration with the BAR interface instead of using ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER file.

Thanks

Less touch files

How about less touch files and integrate this configurable items into the Netbackup Master Server GUI?  I'm talking about the buffer size files and also the SLP configuration touch files that determine max jobs, throughput among other things.

We should have a capability

We should have a capability in Netbackup so we can control the policies under specific users.
Like few policies can control by few users.......

Any comment will be appreciated. Mark as Solution if your query is resolved

Better searching accross backups

We should be able to search backups as we can currently search filesystems. For instance, if I wanted to find all of the PSTs in a specific image and restore them, it takes a huge amount of work at the moment. This is something that should be quite easy to do from the GUI.

Storage Configuration

I've seen a few times I relay would like to be able to configure a storage unit to specify one physical drive.
Mostly for test purposes, but for some I can see the benefit being able to have all tape drives on the san connected to all servers in configuration, and then by NBU Configuration  choose in storage unit 1 or more physical drives to be available..

override backup selection

In case of multiple schedule.. would like to have override backup selection(Like over ride volume pool and over ride storage unit) .. so that there is no need to create n number of policies for single client..just because it has different backup selection

BAR module

I would like to see an option to cancel the loading of the information of ALL images.
with some clients it could take more than 5 minutes to load all information.
When you need only the last set of images it's hard to wait such a long time before being able to select the one I'll need.

I also like to have an option to clear the failure icons on the machines in the Activity Monitor. Some 'right-click' option to clear the screen but leaves the actual error lines in the lower screen. A kind of acknowledge feature, I've seen the errors, but I want a 'clean' window and still access to all error lines.

Thanks in advance for taking the trouble,

Joost

Various suggestions

1) Ability to exclude dates in a calendar schedule in the same way as you can include them (i.e. with the recuring weekdays and recuring days of the month features
2) To get a proper data volume size from activity monitor (i.e. one which reports the actual size of the files that were backed up not the amount of data which reaches the master server
3) The ability to stop a file system backup at the current point (or the end of the current folder). Backup would be listed as incomplete (not partial)

Suggestions

- Be able to restore multiple versions of the same file in the same job. Currently painful process.
- Why can you not suspend all jobs.
- For VADP backups, Netbackup should have a scheduled refresh of the VM locations daily. or be able to say back up all VNM on host server, and be able to dynamically add any new VM's.
- I really like the previous suggestion of being able to disable a single client in a policy.
- In Backup and Restore console from Media Server be able to view all clients currently backed up alphabetically, rather than random like it currently is.
- Also be able to disable client names being case sensitive.

Backup Selection in activity monitor

i would love to see the backup selection for each job displayed in the activity monitor, instead of job details.
